307 hdi wont start no ignition at all

Post by JEREMYH »

Hello 307 2003 2.0 hdi

Turn key dash lights up but starter wont turn no electric fan ect but lights work well

My daugter has this last week called AA and they diagnosed as a low battery(2 month old platinum battery) but that is obviously B S as the starter motor would do something and the fan would work with the ignition on

It is very difficult to convince my daughter that I am right and the AA are wrong those of you with grown up kids will know what I mean

I am not sure where to look before I take it to the garage my code reader wont make a connection I am thinking it may be linked to the BSI however I would expect the engine to turn over

Many Thanks

Try connecting a lead from the battery + to the small terminal on the starter, if it turns you have a wiring fault somewhere or a faulty ignition switch. If it doesn't the starter or solenoid are faulty. If you are brave you can short the two large connections on the starter solenoid together with a screwdriver, use an old one as it will possibly take some metal off, if the starter turns then the solenoid is faulty - still means a replacement starter.

I tried to jump start it down a very hill and no ignition
If the immobilizer was u/s as far as I see it the engine would turn over
So as Peter has said it could be the ignition switch

On closer investigation and a bit more time and patients
It turns out to be the starter motor

Anything with the 12 valve 2.0. Hdi engine will be good up until 2004, especially the 406 they seem to be almost indestructible, they went steadily down hill after that.

Took the old one out today but the spade on the 8mm terminal was badly aged and worn then snaped So I will fit a new spade on in the morning . I will actually make a join and extend the wire to make it easier should it need to be removed in the future .

Peter I am actually considering a 406 for myself to run around in ,in the week

I don't think you will find a better value for money on the market. Have a look on ebay.

Yes, 406 is, in my opinion, their peak of evolution.
Solved all the problems of the 405 without all the unreliable, unnecessary frills of the 407.
Virtually indestructible and plentiful enough to be disposable, if you do break them.
Ours even survived being used as a submarine and resultant hydraulic lock.
Slightly low compression on one cylinder, because it bent a rod, but only noticeable when it was cold.
