It's a good idea to change the seals after you remove the gearbox, cheap items but from experience on a Xsara very annoying when they start dripping your new gear oil on your driveway. I couldn't get the Xsara carrier bearing to move so I loosened the carrier and managed to get the gearbox out. There's more hammering room then but I think I damaged the seal doing that

many thanks, just removed the gearbox, hammer and blunt chiesel a 'Gods send'. came off after a couple of smacks . The release bearing is badly worn as I thought. many thanks again.

Follow CitroJim`s advice,that shaft needs to be removed completely, then the box will just fall off.
Beware though,now that you have been yanking it around with the shaft still in the box,you may have damaged the plastic speedo drive gears. Also make sure both CV`s are still intact?

And it's likely the driveshaft oil seal will be damaged too... Replace both seals as a matter of course ;)
