407 dpf

Post by daviemck2006 »

Bigpug chucked the toys out of the pram yesterday. I had to go to Aberdeen, 45 miles distant, and on the way there I thought its not running properly, it seems to be missing a bit. Coming home, when asked for a kickdown and power for an overtake it lost all power for a couple of seconds, threw on the engine management light and displayed engine pollution system faulty on the dash. I stopped, switched off the engine, and id was very difficult to restart. She then drove 30 miles home with the EML on, in limp home mode, not revving over 2500 approx. I think this will probably be the DPF needing attention. The EGR is mapped to stay closed with the remap. Am I thinking along the right lines with DPF? Is it time to take it off for a look to see if it needs a clean out or replace? The car has done just over 86000 miles. Does anyone know if this car would have Eolys? Its the 2.7 v6 hdi.

Could be anything really, Davie, needs to go on the computer to see what it's upset about. However, given that it occurred when you made a power demand, I would suspect the fuel filter if it's not been changed recently; modern diesels don't like dirty ones! It's a relatively cheap thing to try in the absence of any diagnostic info. Almost certainly it has Eolys if it has a DPF - post up the last 8 digits of the VIN and we can check.

That was my initial thought when it was not running properly. It felt life it wasnt getting proper fuelling. I have no record of a fuel filter change so that will be tried first, as its a service item anyway. The numbers are 21453541. Thanks Richard.

Yes it's got Eolys. Filter is a replacement element job, so definitely a cheap thing to try!

I have ordered a fuel filter, along with oil and air. It will get them and the oil changed once they appear, and see if that makes a difference. Then I will have to investigate the dpf and Eolys.

Davie, do you have any ready access to Lexia diagnostics and a quick session hooked up to one may well help to nail down the issue...

I'm probably closest, but my cable won't reach that far....

If it's set a permanent engine fault, then an OBD reader should be be able to pick up the fault code easy enough.

I don’t have Leica or similar. I have n new fuel filter, ordered 3pm yesterday arrived 3pm this afternoon. Will get fitted tomorrow and see if that helps. That’s what eBay motor factors should be like, prompt postage and non of this extra charges I suffer for highlands and island which I usually suffer.

New fuel filter fitted, the old one was not very nice looking but it has made no difference. Next thing I will do is remove the dpf for a look, and see if I can clean it. A mechanic said, and I dont know if he was serious or not, pour petrol in it and set fire to it, mmmmmmm
Thats the dpf, not the car (I think!)

I hope he was joking, because only a complete cockwit would suggest such a thing. All that vapour in a small space. Ha... I think KP had a way of cleaning them which involved alloy wheel cleaner or Mr. Muscle, leaving it to soak, and a pressure washer.

You're peeing in the wind without some diagnostics, Davie.... it's unlikely to be the DPF. You can get cheap OBD code readers which should be able to pull the OBD engine codes off, otherwise you need to get it to somewhere that can interrogate it.

Ok, so it has taken time to look at this. Today a man with a van, subcontracted to the AA interrogated the car, and came up with P1331. Depending where you look can get umpteen different causes. So no further ahead. But the mechanic says, when the car says a fault in the engine emissions system, to start by cleaning the dpf. Use mr muscle oven cleaner, get under the car, remove the sensor on top of the dpf and squirt in the cleaner. Leave a while then start and run engine for 20 mins. Must be worth a try for a quid out of tesco, or even from under the kitchen sink. Then top up Eolys, and possible clean egr. Then check the relays for the glow plugs, then change glow plugs. All that seems a bit hit and miss to me.

For a can of oven cleaner it has to be worth a go Davie ;)

Nothing to loose really...

Let's hope it is successful [-o<

The guy said thats all they use, and dont take the dpf off. I had been told about mr muscle, someone I know said take the dpf off and soak it in a bucket of water with mr muscle in it, then power wash it. Whatever method he said dont buy expensive dpf cleaner, the oven cleaner does it better and that goes for egr cleaner too.

P1331 appears to be No3 cylinder knock limit reached - which suggests running trouble, and I doubt that is causing it to not run... needs some better diagnostics I'm afraid!!
