Re: Gearbox oil
Two things need nailing here, Doc:
- If you could post your VIN number, we can definitively confirm the gearbox type
- Someone with access to original Peugeot service data (which I don't have) will be able to confirm the gear oil requirement, GL-4 or 5.
My earlier post was simply to point up the importance of getting the right one, and avoid incorrect use of GL-5.

Re: Gearbox oil
Just wondering... The engine oil grade was 5w30 or 10w40 when the car was made. Searching on-line seems everything from 0W50 to 10w40 seems to be sold as suitable, seems a very wide range of oils for one engine?

Re: Gearbox oil
PSA boxes in the last 25 years so use only TOTAL 75W80 - no need to look any further. There was some discussion here about gear oils a while back - IIRC, GL5 is better then GL4 at protection in extreme pressure environments, but some of the additives used can attack some bronze fittings. GL4/5 offers the lubricity of GL5 but with additives that are bronze safe.

Re: Gearbox oil
It is somewhat dependent on the temperatures likely to be experienced - 0w30 for northern Scandinavia and similar climes, 10w30/10w40 for UK type climates and higher viscosities for tropical countries.
I always use Total Quarz 7000 10w30 but 10w40 is OK.
More recent cars with FAP need a higher grade with low ash/sulphur - Total Quarz Ineo.

I live in Ireland so pretty much same temperatures as Scotland and north of England. The 0w50 oil is €70.00 or £65.00 a gallon here I bought Castrol 10w40 GTX for I think €30 odd with filter. I'd change diesel engine oil every 5-6k anyway. As an aside is Duckhams oil still sold? I always bought it years ago haven't seen it for some time.

Re: Gearbox oil
That is a lot of €'s for it, try some online sources.
IIRC Duckhams has been Esso for years now.
I was sure Mick's Garage was in NI but apparently not. Sold out anyway
I did have a link to one that is that had very reasonable prices for Total oils.
Sourcing from the mainland may incur high shipping fees so be careful but do ask at your dealers, sometimes they can be pleasantly surprising (not often admittedly).

Re: Gearbox oil
I checked with the post office and I can't buy any oil over the post into Ireland because of the flash point (flash point is well over 200c). I grinded my teeth for a while and rang a Citroen garage. Parts guy said he doesn't have Total gear oil but has "the stuff we use in the service bay" It's 75w80 GL4+. What do you guys think? Only other options I have is Eurol 75w80 gl4 gear oil or a 70+ mile drive to a main dealer in Belfast

Re: Gearbox oil
That 75W80 GL4+ will be fine.
Our Citroen workshops here have the stuff in 200-litre drums (with a dispensing pump) which only carry a small label sayings it's Total Transmission 8. The technicians here just use the stuff (in all manual Citroens), and one of them had to roll out the drum to check what it was.
They filled up a clean 5-litre container for me; €4/litre.
Wouldn't be surprised if your Citroen garage's oil is Total - it's company policy to use it. Independents likely different.

It's worth noting that Neilson CDG are offering a 5% discount if you quote the discount code from here.

I did a quick check for 75/80 and got these hits back. Haven't had time to check the prices though.

Re: Gearbox oil
I don't know how to add a photo and as I said earlier I can't get oil through the post because of the supposed flash point.
This is the oil says 9730.A2 on the can and as itr came from a Citroen garage and has loads of little citroen and Peugeot logos I'm pretty sure it's the correct oil.
I want to thank all you guys for replies and suggestions. I learned a lot about gear oil from this thread.

Re: Gearbox oil
9730.A2 is the CIt/Peu part number for the oil you need, and packaged accordingly.
