SOLVED 206 - Pioneer radio won't turn on/off with ignition

Post by rzepek2pl »

Hello. I just bought a 2005 Peugeot 206 XS. I swapped the original radio with a Pioneer because I rely on the aux. Unfortunately, the radio won't turn on when I turn on the ignition, then it won't turn off when I remove the key. I didn't give a shot to the original radio, so I'm not sure if the Pioneer is the problem, or there's something wrong with the radio in general. I like that I don't need the key in the ignition for the radio to work, but the fact that I have to turn it on and off manually is quite unbearable. I don't mind the radio controller not working (I can always buy a proper adaptor). Am I supposed to modify the adaptor I already have? I wanna add that I already swapped red and yellow wire with one another. Please, don't give me answers like "you should've kept the original radio." Nevertheless, thanks a lot in advance for helping me out. :)

It is possible that, on the PSA vehicles, the permanent live and ignition live are switched around compared to the normal wiring. I had this happen on my BX, and all I did was to fit an adaptor with the two relevant wires swapped over. That way the radio worked as it was meant to.

I do NOT know the wiring, so before swapping the wires around you will need to check a proper wiring diagram.

Sounds quite obvious, now that you've said it. I'll look for the wiring diagram. If that helps in any way, I tried the unswapped red and yellow wires, and it just brought back the problem of the radio losing memory, so I swapped them back. I'll give it a shot, thanks a lot! :D

Connecting a non PSA radio to a multiplexed car can cause all sorts of mayhem. You need to connect only the power, earth and speaker wires - and you may need to run a separate switched live off the cigarette lighter to make it come on and off with the ignition (the original radio is switched by a signal from the BSI which won't work on an aftermarket radio).

Re the red and yellow isn't one meant to be switched live and the other permanent live?
You've got permanent if it retained memory the first way round. Just need to find a switched live to borrow for the other wire and you should be fine.

Okay, so the problem solved itself. Turns out, you have to wait long enough after locking the car (or removing the key from the ignition) for the radio to shut off - 2-3 minutes. The moment you unlock the car powers on the radio. So there's that. :D
