just for the record really....
I change anywhere from 2k for urban pootling (which I don't do much of ) up to a max of about 3250rpm for haste. I did take it up to just over 3500rpm at one point on Sunday's jaunt, which it spun round to quite willingly... in fact it did seem to deliver a (slight) 'kick in the back' from about 2750 to 3500rpm, so clearly horses for courses. Makes me think I've confused power and torgue.
Also, I know that if I hit a local 'long drag' on the dual carriageway at 70mph, which is getting on for 3500rpm, it'll go up it nicely, but if I do so at 60 (just shy of 3k) I could be doing as little as 40mph ish at the top. Its probably the only place I make sure I'm doing 70mph, as most of its motorway & Dual C use is spent at 62-65mph with occasional bursts for those occasions when one of the outer lanes is the safest place to be, M4 / M25 Heathrow ish comes to mind.
Gotta be some sound engineering when at a quarter million miles & 22years old its still doing 12k a year without too much bother, touch wood

...oh and I 'found' the Glowplug light too, middle bottom of the panel. Its 'intermittent', mostly not, but has periods when it'll work 2 or 3 times in succession before giving up again for a while.

I can't for the life of me remember the gearing ratios for your car, but did wonder whether "3500rpm at 70mph" (presumably in 5th?) was correct? Maybe someone here will know.
Intermittent glowplug light on the dash may be just the bulb/holder getting tired, but could also be dirty contacts on the glowplug relay, either external contacts or internal ones. The GP relay controls the dash light, as well as the GPs; relay easily opened up and cleaned. They are known for deteriorating with age.

Thanks for the advice on the Glowplug lights & Relay: daughter's relay on the 106 is nearly new so will transfer that across come Sept, see if it makes a difference.

There must be some different ratios as the 1.9td with a BE3 will do 80mph at about 3000revs in 5th. I always liked that speed as both needles approximately pointed straight up.

The only reason I asked about the 3500@70 figure was that it (revs) seemed rather high for a diesel.
Wondering whether either speedo or tacho is displaying inaccurately . . . unless that figure is correct, of course.
Should be some mph/1000rpm figures available somewhere.

You should fit one yourself Jim, might improve your performance even more. There is a strange anomaly with the 1.7 and 1.9 TD's in the 405, they are both rated at 90 hp so the torque curve must be different, do they use a different camshaft?

I have, in the past, fitted a 'box from a 90 HDi Xantia to a 1.9TD Xantia with excellent results.. The 90 HDi 'box is just a tad 'taller' on the final drive and works particularly well where the TD engine as been tweaked a little...

...and I decided that for the 10mins or so it'd take, it'd be rather silly of me not to at least clean up the external contacts of the Glowplug relay and check the contacts on the multi-plug straight away: the two 'ring' connections were remarkably crusty and so far (about 4 starts) the light's illuminated every time, so many thanks
On a completely different subject, I appear to have found a non-405 Gear knob & gaiter that fits - pure fluke, it was thrown in the 106 that I removed daughter's indicator switch from, the gaiter's a bit short but with some sewing, fingers crossed. Am also going to try a glass fibre & black spray paint repair to my spare, split 'proper' ones. Future projects....

Glad you got the GP relay sorted. Take a look at its internal contacts as well, if you can; they have a hard life.
