If everything works fine when you jump the earth to pin 13, there is power to the ecu. Have you checked the pin on the ecu where pin 13 on the wiring block connects for earth.

The plug we are looking at on the ECU is a 48 way BLACK plug, the 3 plugs are normally Black, Brown & grey, the coloured part is on the underside where the pins go in. The wire may change colour as it goes through IC02 but the number remains the same. Best to confirm with wire numbers if you can.
How did you check the earths ? If you just done a continuity check or resistance check that's not good enough.
paullap wrote:I cant seem to find any power feed to the ECU,, What pins should have 12v ?. Rather that keep checking every wire ans what fuse feeds the ECU?
According to that diagram pin K4 on the 48 way black plug on the ECU should be ignition live fed. This comes from fuse 4 of the under bonnet fusebox & exits the fusebox via pin 12 of the 16 way green connector. But if it is powering up then I would also say it has a live supply.
My money is still on an earth issue, im guessing your test lamp is providing enough of an earth via the bulb to make it work.

Hi, Have you ever tried to see the numbers on these thin wires, It is impossible. I will check the lives again on pin K4 on the 48n pin connector, I will check the colours of the conector, The backs all look the same, I was unaware of the colours under the connectors are different. i will have another look tomorrow. I tested the earths by connecting my test light to the possitive on the baterry and probed the earths. and the test light lights up. I have tested them with the plugs disconected on the ecu. is that OK?.

Results Green connector on the fuse board under the bonnet Pin 12 12.26 volts
Fuse 4 live both sides

black 48 way connector K4 no wire in it

This is what I have readings on, by the way back brown and grey connectors as you said.

Black 48 way connector

good earth L1 M1 L2
A2 2.18 volts B2 12.2 volts G2 1.28 volts

A3 1.1 volts F3 12.25 volts K3 12.25 Volts

D4 12.24 volts H4 035 v L4 1.5 volts

Kind Regards

Can you check the resistances & continuity (with both plugs disconected) between pin 13 of the 16 way black on the BSM & pin F4 of the 48 way black on the ECU & then check the same between pin 3 of the 16 way black on the BSM & pin A3 of the 48 way black on the ECU.
If these check out ok i would be tempted to add an additional earth to the 3 earth wires direct to the battery negative.
Have you managed to locate IC02 yet ?

Is that a black connector under the ecu?. I seem to remember seeing one. I will have a look when I get back. If I add another earth to the ecu 3 wires back to the battery. Where do I connect to. Splice in to the 3 wires?.

Many thanks

IC = Interconnector & the one in question is a 6 way black, the previous diagram shows it to be in the vicinity of the ECU.
I would also try to locate the splice EM11 (shown in one of the earlier posted diagrams) as this is where the earth wires from the ECU join together. I would probably re do this splice (solder & heatshrink will do) & add in the additional earth there.

Ok today I have traced that wire from pin 13 on the 16 way connector it is light blue, it goes behind the cylinder head and out the other side of the engine in to that IC 02 connector and comes out the other end of thee connector a purple wire to the F4 on the engine ecu, My test leads on my ohms meter are reading 0.4 ohms before I start, Testing the wire just before it disappears behind the cylinder head it reads 0.6 ohms, but when it comes out on the left hand side it reads """7.9 ohms"""", could this be the problem, what I don't know is it one complete wire right to left ?. or does it go somewhere else so it would give me these readings?.

"""""Fixed"""""""", The wire from Pin 13 had broken round the back of the engine, Soldered a new bit in, and all is great.

Many many Many thanks for all the help. I don't think I would have got there without the info from the people on this forum, If anyone needs any help with a 1948 Lea Francis 2 1/2 litre sports I will return the help.

Thanks again
