Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
Any ideas.....???
Cuts out suddenly, first you know is all the ignition lights come on; restarts immediately and instantly.
Tends to be usually, but not exclusively; when braking hard or cornering enthusiastically; hot or cold seems not to make a difference. Most recently, was simply pootling along, not accelerating, not braking, part throttle, just steady.
Sudden-ness of it leads me to suspect an electrical issue, eg power to the stop solenoid; so, so far...
Changed the Stop Solenoid for a known good one
Checked wiring is secure to Stop Solenoid and that its in good condition
Does anyone know of something I can put on the stop solenoid that'll show me if the power's been interrupted? For instance my old bedroom clock radio will reset iitself in such an instance, but that's 240v of course so not suitable.
Or maybe I could run a temporary supply from the Battery + to the Stop Solenoid with an inline fuse for safety, see if the problem persists? Would doing so give it too much juice and potentially fry it?
Also, anyone know what path the power takes to the Stop Solenoid when it disappears into the loom? Does it go via the Ignition?
I'm pretty sure it'd cough & splutter before cutting out if it was a fuel supply issue, wouldn't it, and likely need a bit of cranking to draw fuel?
Too old to have an ECU so can't be that

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
To see whether the supply to the stop solenoid is dropping out/intermittent, just connect a small 12v testlamp between the stop solenoid terminal and chassis/ground. Lamp should be on all the time the IGN is switched on/engine running.
Stop solenoid usually goes straight back to IGN switch. Contacts in these have been known to go dirty/faulty.
There may be a fuse (and intermittent contact) between IGN sw and stop solenoid. Circuit diag needs looking at.
Is this on your 405?

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
yes, 'tis on the 405. Not satisfied with failing its MOT in impressive fashion (Brakes & Ball Joints mostly - now rectified), now this.
Not sure the lamp idea 'll work effectively, as it'd require me to be looking at it constantly; a momentary 'out' 'd be easy to not see

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
One thing you can do is pop the stop solenoid out, remove its plunger and spring and refit it. You will now have a stop solenoid that isn't a stop solenoid for test purposes to determine if it is an electrical issue.
You'll need to use the emergency stop lever to stop the engine; don't stall it to stop it as that can damage the clutch and drivetrain components south of the clutch...
I'd be feeling it is electrical...

good thinking Jim, will be doing that. Thank You.
25miles this morning with the Missus and one cut out. 30miles with me this afternoon and none.

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
A quick question on not stalling an old XUD with solid flywheel. How is stalling it, in 4th gently, any more damaging than pulling away quickly. I did this for 2 years with my old BX, original clutch and 450000 miles, no issues. I can understand that frequent harsh stalling with a dual mass may not be a good idea, but then only for the dual mass. I can also understand it's not a recommended method, but?

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
I understand a stall can rip the centre out of the clutch and besides, it does send quite a shock through the entire drivetrain...

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
Yes I believe it can send a shock through the drivetrain, but again we did (in my inexperience of not knowing there was a stop lever!) stall-stop the ZX for a few months after we bought it while I faffed around with the suspension repairs instead of fitting the new stop solenoid. Admittedly the numbers are nowhere near as impressive as a half-million mile BX on it's original clutch, but all the same we never had a problem. Still, as long as there is a stop lever I suppose that is always going to be the "proper" way to stop a diesel sans-solenoid.

I'm just a cautious person with a bit of mechanical sympathy when it comes to things like stalling diesels

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
no news on it yet, by the way, coz I've not yet removed it. I'm gonna do so after its MOT re-test in a couple of days' time.
Instead I've cranked up the anti-stall screw for the moment; though I doubt it'll make any difference .

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
If it is the solenoid or wiring, like you said, adjusting the anti-stall won't do anything. It's a 2 minute job to remove the rubber boot and i think there is a little spring in there as well, so take care, then obviously screw the solenoid body back in. Once you've done that, to check to the loom wiring rig a 12v light up to the solenoid feed and run it into the car so you can see it. I use an old bike indicator. All the best

Haha me too, my test lamp of choice is a rear indicator from an '80s Honda Visionmoizeau wrote:....I use an old bike indicator. All the best

Re: Cuts Out Suddenly, Restarts immediately
This may sound odd, but is all the wiring to the battery secure? I had one car that had a intermittent earth that would randomly die, and another where the battery could move around and it ended up ripping a live out that went to the fusebox, that took the PAS and fan out!

Thanks for the suggestion Stu, taken a look and its all good. I expect you've noticed that I'm giving away a Haynes ZX D manual (postage cost only), but just a mention in case not
