Definitely got to be worth trying to sort, the car's had some money spent on it & should be easy enough to sell on if it's running right. Depending how long ago the cambelt job was done it'd be worth checking the belt hasn't jumped a tooth or two due to incorrect tension too...

Another thought, you said as it got cold... has the car been sat idle since the summer perhaps? how much diesel is in the tank? it could potentially be as simple as waxed up summer diesel if it's had the same fuel in a few months...

we had it running yesterday - on easy start into the air intake.

wouldn't run in diesel but had it idling on careful spraying of easy start

Pull the pump apart & at least show us the carnage if it can't be fixed economically, you know you wanna! (Distance is the issue again or I'd jump on it!)

Is this a TUD5 or a TUD5B ? W plate is right on the change over year.

How to tell without looking for numbers: TUD5B has a large ECU sat on top of the battery and usually no fast idle thermo cable (the thermostat housing can be drilled and plugged or on later ones completely undrilled)

How to tell part2: The 'K' engine management light may be present. Very early TUD5B's did not (appear) to have this connected for some reason though.

How to tell part3: LED opposed to bulbs for the panel warning lights, but this is not always an ideal indication as its possible to fit them to earlier models and / or the early TUD5B I think had conventional bulbs.

TUD5B is *fully* electronic advance control, a bit like the later XUD9D/TD Xantia and 406.

As an aside note the ECU fitted ontop of the battery top does not appear to have any control over the immobiliser (surprisingly) as the yes/no is in the Texton. What I am getting at by this is even if the Texon says "no!" but the stop solenoid is open then it *will* control the pump timing properly.
Andy.

TUD5 - no ecu (if you look at the video in the first post you`ll see)

but , theres no fast idle cable fitted , the thermostat housing has a plug in place where it goes - but the cold start advance on the pump can be moved manually

when plugging lexia in , I can only see the airbag ecu , any other option comes up as an error

Ah OK. As mentioned initially I could not get the vid to work properly (my issue) but I'll admit I did not retry it.

You have a fully mechanical pump, there won't be anything on Lexia/Diagbox/Planet about it really even the EGR is manually controlled via the pump microswitch (later ones are ECU controlled, kind of) , you'll only see things like the immobiliser transponder etc for engine related items.

There's no mass air in the fuel pipes no ?

Has the pump been dismantled lately or anything changed ? By this I mean the control arm / fast idle levers ? It is possible to get them wrong despite they being sort of keyed.

Its a shame this topic did not appear about 8 or 10 months ago I had a fully working Bosch TUD5 pump (mechanical advance, dearmoured) to get rid of :( came off a blown engine ran out of oil ( ! )

As put above and as I mentioned I would at least whip the top cam belt cover off and check that with it at TDC the cam and pump 'slots' are correct. As they are on hubs if the three bolts came loose it can move quite a bit, certainly a tooth's worth which will cause very odd running. There's no cost in this :D only a little time.

If the pump and cam are correct and you're sure that its not mass full of air then a replacement pump would be the way to go.

I'm not a betting man but if its not pump then my thoughts are the belt is incorrectly positioned or if those bolts have come loose (its possible they were not tightened up enough) then that could well be the cause.
Andy.

Oh OK.

Well the thought was the hub bolts had come loose (rare but not impossible) which would cause erm 'interesting' concerns.

I'd not rely on it running on E/S though really.

Will it continue to idle (forever) if its left alone ? Its got to be the pump then really although it does seem a bizarre issue.

try it on an a temporary supply from a can.

I've got two separate posts here and a link to photos with fuelling problems whereby the pump was 'prime suspect' but it turned out to be fine.
