Andy, I've seen that on some IT/Software forums... Not sure if this board can do it but it certainly has merit... It works well enough there even if the forums themselves are about as friendly as cornered rats...

Or possibly an automated swift kick via email if the thread hasn't been replied to by the op X days after the last response. No reply? Ban ip ?

A bit draconian to ban methinks. As well as bad manners there are other reasons for not replying. The problem may not have been fixed, I might have been too busy (I do have a life elsewhere), I might have been ill, or I may just have forgotten.

I think encouragement rather than wielding a big stick is the way to go. And we just have to accept that some people will just use us without contributing.

I personally go for the encouragement route. On a gaming forum I am a member one person got into difficulties, and asked for help. I (and others) offered advise. Later he came back, to say that the problem had been resolved, and thanks for the help. My response was "Great, good news".

I quite agree James, generally it's exactly what I do and like to see others do the same too...

Paul, James, Jim, I agree a ban is too harsh (note to self, do not post after a bad day at work). I do think though, that a polite automated email to first 'threaders' to let them know they have a response may be worthwhile.

I think general courtesy would be to reply to an initial post even if the fault has been found and rectified from an external source, it doesn't take much effort and could lead to an input of valuable information.

The other thing is leaving threads open ended when a number of replies have been given but we never here back from the OP as to whether he actually used and of the information that was provided for him. I am sure we would all like to know whether it led to a successful conclusion.
