Peugeot 806 xud 2.1td Lucas pump rough hot idle

Post by freelancewriter1 »

Hello Forum members..I have just found you and hope someone can help with my problem.
My 1997 Peugeot 806 2.1 td (335,000km) has a rough hot idle. So rough it shakes the whole car. If you push the throttle a little to try and stop the unevenness the revs leap from 800 to 2000. up and down. Starts well normally, and no unevennsess in idle until warms up. When driving the hot engine pulls away unevenly too until over 2000 revs then all ok. Engine seems to firing on all four cylinders on idle. Slight whistle from turbo, poss small air leak, but turbo pulls well as speed picks up.

Wondered if it could be one of the sensors as I had a similar problem on my 1993 Escort 1600 zetec and cleaned the slow running sensor to cure it.

Any help much appreciated as my daily driver and excellent car except for this problem.

One other thing...this last week it has begun to cut out when stopping at junctions...almost every time. Is this a clue?

Thanks
Richard

Hello, welcome to the forum.
The cause will the 4 viton o rings underneath the top actuator (it's hidden under the top plastic cover.
You can buy a complete seal kit and overhaul, but this isn't normally necessary. It can be done in with the pump on the car using care and cleanliness. I'll have a look for the actual sizes. You'll be able to but them from o ring / bearing supplier, probably with a minimum quantity of 10 of each. First thing to do is put your hand underneath the pump and see if id is wet with diesel.

Here is a link to some photos and further info previously posted by Jim .

One ting to remember if you start to take the pump to bits is to be very careful with the wires that will be exposed once the plastic cover has been removed. After the years and mileage the insulation becomes very brittle, falls off and leaves bare wires that can play merry hell.

Even if you do find that the pump is leaking it may still not be necessary to remove the pump.
Cracking engine and worth doing, If it's just the top actuator rings it will take a couple of hours (the 1st time) and about a tenner!
Mechanics shudder at the fault and then run off, diesel specialists will charge you in the region of 300 quid (not including taking the pump off and then back on) because they like to keep it as a 'black art'

All the best
Pete
Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone
