Is driving a car that is clearly not able to pass an MOT i.e. no rear silencer just a straight pipe an offence under the road traffic act Regards Peter

Yes.
If you were on your way to have it fixed you would probably not get a ticket. So just ring every Tire n exhaust place along your route and tell them you are coming. Then if you get stopped you can say you were going to whatever place is the next one along.[:0]
