Peugeot 306 convertible roof won't close

Post by Sharon Young »

Desperate for help please. Yesterday, I didn't notice I left an umbrella on the back shelf behind the head rests. I tried to put the roof down and of course it jammed. The bars also made 4 small holes in the roof canvas! Now, the roof starts to close but stops just before it is fully closed. I tried to manually close it but can't push it all the way down into the boot and then I had to close it manually. A forum has suggested tightening the elastic straps but I am frightened the problem becomes worse. Any advice would be great!

Welcome to the forum Sharon. Sorry it is under such difficult circumstances.

I don't think that there are many 306 convertible owners around here, I have a 308CC, but that is a different kettle of fish entirely.

I am not completely understanding your description of the current situation, when you use the word "close" are you talking about putting the roof up, or talking about the cover when the roof is down?

When the roof stops in the wrong position, does it sould like the motor is stopping or is it straining against an obstruction?

I suspect that you might need specialist help, but would be worried that a dealer might say that a new roof is required...

Hi Sharon, These old 306 roofs are very tricky to get right and as said above are nothing like the latest "metal CC`s".
As its trying to work the hydraulics must be OK,so may be the ECU may need resetting as the cycle was interrupted by the umbrella??
I would surgest you find an "Old School Peugeot expert" who has had experience with 306 roofs and has the old Peugeot diag2000 equipment.
As you are based in France that should be a simple task, good luck.

Thankyou for responding. When I used the electrics to open the roof, it worked ok but as the roof didn't fully fold down into place, the roof storage cover was trying to close on it. When I tried to reset everything by opening it manually, it would not fold down completely, so I was still unable to close the roof storage cover. And yes, I recon the local dealers over here will tell me I need a new roof!

Cheers for your reply, it's really appreciated. Yes it is trying to work but I have also tried to open it manually and it won't fold down enough to close the storage cover. By setting the ECU,do you mean disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery?

Hi, and welcome to the forum, for whatever reasons that you joined.

It is not uncommon for an ECU to develop a glitch. The best way to resolve a glitch (but not a major problem) is to do a BSi reset. This, in effect, resets all the ECUs back to factory defaults. There is a routine for doing this on Citroens, but I cannot promise that this will work for a Peugeot. Here is the link to the Citroen BSi reset routine though;

Hi there, many thanks. I think that might be a job for a garage. I am also unsure of the battery life as it was a second hand car. I am worried that it hasn't just developed a glitch which has caused it to fail, but the umbrella! I was hoping that I could try something a bit less complicated. Off to try and mend the holes in the canvas roof now caused by this!

I don't think that the 306 is new enough to have a BSI.

Very late (mark 3 as in 2000 onwards) have a 'pretend' BSi , in that it has partial control of the lights / immob / wipers. Its just a larger 'texton' type box. Interestingly the very late ones, they removed the 'hatch' where you could get at it once you'd whipped the centre console out. This is a bit like the very early 206's (pre 200) where it was a 'kind of' BSi but without a COM2K or anything, as far as I'm aware it really was just a relay box on these as they 'tried to get it right' :-D

Regarding the roof, I think there's a valve you can release via a small 'tap' or suchlike in the boot area, this way the hydraulics are not connected to the pump so you can then with care manually 'move' the roof to where you want it to go. It may actually explain this in the handbook or such but I'm not sure. I do not have access to any data at the moment to verify this as I'm not on my usual machine.
Andy.

It won't have a BSI.
Like I said above its best to find "an old school Peugeot Tech`" with the old Peugeot Diag2000 diagnostic tool, plug it in to check fault codes, clear and reset ECU.
