Anyone got a 307?

Post by Peter.N. »

Owing to the recent demise of one of my 406s and the C5 I am looking for a replacement. I favour another 406 as they have proved very reliable and use the bombproof 2.0. 8 valve hdi, but it has come to my attention that the 307 also seems to use the same engine, so can anyone who runs one give me some advice.

Firstly is the 90hp engine the same as the 406 uses, does it have FAP and is it reasonably easy to work on.

How does the car in general compare with the 406? Comfort, internal space, ride and handling?

It would be an SW that i would want.

Any information would be welcome.

Thanks

How honest can I be ? :( And not offending any owners...

If you're having one, get as late (newer) one as possible. The facelifted one is a *lot* better. :) Please try to avoid earlier models if you can.

Ensure that *all* the recalls have been done. One quite common (and a bit annoying) thing is the glovebox handle can snap off. You then have to break it to enter said compartment in most cases. A cursory glance at the recall table from the dft site:

1 30/04/2002 R/2002/091 PEUGEOT 307 ignition switch fire risk
2 23/08/2002 R/2002/043 PEUGEOT 307 front shock absorber concern
3 08/11/2002 R/2002/159 PEUGEOT 307 incorrect specification brake fluid
4 05/12/2002 R/2002/172 PEUGEOT 307 front brake pipe may chafe on anti roll bar
5 08/01/2003 R/2003/006 PEUGEOT 307 Automatic possibility that vehicle could be started with gear selector in any position
6 02/09/2003 R/2003/147 PEUGEOT 307 possibility of cuts in tyres.
7 21/03/2004 R/2004/047 PEUGEOT 307 possibility that egr support bracket may break

9 11/06/2004 R/2004/099 PEUGEOT 307 the vehicle may not be correctly fitted with a rear seat anchorage point strengthener
10 09/07/2004 R/2004/117 PEUGEOT 307 & 807 failure of the throttle stop, could lead to a reduction in braking assistance
11 12/07/2004 R/2004/118 PEUGEOT 307 concern that the lower axle swivel joint was not tightened correctly
12 11/04/2005 R/2005/047 PEUGEOT 206,307 and 407 (HDi models) possible seepage on the diesel fuel return pipe
13 03/05/2005 R/2005/065 PEUGEOT 307CC excessive oscillation of the throttle valve

Its not all bad. I don't want to be a "doom and gloom" merchant.

Plus points: 'interesting' driving position, very comfy seats. Plenty of poke (relatively) unless you obtain a 1.4 petrol ( ! ) , plenty of space too in the SW model.

The SW has the cable holding the spare wheel up I think (I'm not 100% sure) and these are a bit unpleasant. Hatch has it in the boot in a wheel well like the 406 does. Its not 'external' in a 'cage' as the 405 was.

I would have one myself but I'd want as later model as possible really personally just to get an um 'better' one.

There were quite a few as taxis up here a few years ago so I would think that makes them ok. My brother had a 2005 2.0hdi SW, it was the 90 and amazing fuel economy. I never drove it but it was ok to passenger in. Dunno how long term reliability was as like everyone of his cars had a premature death by tree.

Thanks for your comments, I would really like to drive one and see if I like it. The 406 is a tried and tested design, my previous one ran almost faultlessly for 5 years and about 60k - until it got damp inside! Started once but is now in permanent lock out. Now I have sorted the fuel consumption in my new 406 its going like a dream but I need another car as we live in the sticks and can't afford to be without one.

I'm pleased with mine.. but it's a late Mk2 1.6 HDi... Ride is OK - it's a bit bouncy at the back, but I think the rear shocks are a bit seized on mine. The 1.6 is not too bad to work on as it is upright; I would guess the 2.0 8V being canted back would be well hidden under the scuttle - it's not too bad to get the wipers and plastic off though to get at the back of the engine. I find it comfortable (I'm 6ft and 15st) - but there is not much room in the back seat! I was getting 55mpg; but it's dropped back to 50 - I suspect I need to clean the DPF - I imagine you would get 70+ out of a 1.6 given you can get 60 out of a 2.0! I find it nice to drive - it's very positive and turns in nicely with reasonable feed back. I'd certainly have another!

Pollen filter is a bit fiddly on the HDi but not too bad its just a question of space to pull the um 'handle' cover out the way first. :)

90Hdi (2.0) will not have DPF and probably no DMF, the 110HDi (2.0) will have a DPF (certainly later ones do) and as Richard has just said the 1.6HDi does have.

I think my only "point" really is the "MK2" as originally stated ;) They are a lot better.
