Door seized shut/ locked

Post by Gregg1100 »

Hi,
Getting my daughter in laws old Peugeot 106 1999 1.1 Zest ready for the MOT, I can't now open the nearside rear door ( been standing for a while ). I have managed to get the door card off and given the mechanism a good dowsing of Plus Gas and WD 40. No matter how hard I pull /push on the linkage inside door, I can't get the door to unlock and open.
Has anyone had this fault and managed to open door???
The o/s rear door lock is naff too, so will need one of those,
Thanks,
Greg

It is possible that the wiring has failed in the concertina grommet between the pillar and door. I had this on my silver Xantia, with both rear doors off the central locking. One door was not locking (so could, at least, be opened, and would lock from the button), but the other was deadlocked. Repairing the wiring resolved both door issues.

No wiring on this car- no central locking- mechanical only

I recall some time ago having one of these, the problem turned out to be the outside door handle lever seized inside not allowing the link to fall back into place. had to drill out the rivets holding it to the door (behind the bit that lifts) remove the outer handle and free off the seized link then refit.

Gibbo is right, this also happens on 205`s.
With a lot of poking, prodding and a tin of WD40 it is possible to free it off in situ buts its best to remove it. Why 106 door handle are riveted on beets me? 205`s got screws?

Its far easier for a robot to pop rivet when assembling than screwing in nuts & bolts.

Nearside rear door handle lever was seized up( what lifts the opening mechanism when you lift exterior handle).
The offside exterior handle lever was free, but all the door lock assembly was seizing. With the exterior handle removed, I could get a good spray of Plus Gas directed straight at assembly, plus loads of motorcycle chain grease after. Should keep it from seizing again for a good while.
Thanks for your help.

I had to replace the nearside rear latch on mine as it would not 'latch' properly half the time.

The handle, yes its riveted although not a mass problem. You may of noticed there is no direct 'rod' from the exterior handle to the actual latch itself, it sort of just pulls / pushes at it.

I can tell you I found it a complete "£$"£$" to change ( ! ) which is surprising as I'd done plenty of front ones in my time but never a rear one.

The space is (even when you move a few things out of the way such as the window regulator ( ! ) ) somewhere between extremely poor and non-existent.   :-D

There'd be no easy way to 'nut and bolt' the handle on, if from a design point of view it *had* to be bolts then rivet nuts would probably of been used I guess... :)

With the door card off, warm (roast) the lock with a hot air gun. This usually frees it out and works on most makes and models. When you get it open replace the lock as its likely to do it again
PS. Missed the bit where you got it open.

""PS. Missed the bit where you got it open.""
Once I drilled out rivets, and removed exterior handle, I was able to yank on the door opening rod to open the catch. A swine to get the exterior handle lever to sit in the right place to operate the release catch on lock assembly. Riveted back on now.
A dickens of a job to get the offside exterior handle back in, so will have to take that door card off to be able to see what I am doing. As said, not an easy job.

Oh its quite 'fun' I know.

What's more fun is removing and replacing the latch itself.

All done and dusted. I removed screws holding the actual lock in place and let it hang a bit. Fitted outside handle and it just seemed to slot straight into place. Refitted lock quick, before it changed it's mind. Two rivets and a good bath of motorcycle chain grease later, job done.
Cuss rating 11/10, lol.
