306 hdi won't start

Post by denis747 »

Hi all, I have a Peugeot 306 hdi 2.0 hdi 90 horsepower registered in 2000. I drove it fine to a local yard where I was going to buy a window regulator. I switched the engine off but left the key in position one to allow my friend to listen to the radio. While I was talking to the guys at the yard, we heard a loud bang. I went out to the car to check if a coil spring had snapped but they were ok. I then tried to start the engine and it just cranked without starting. The guys at the yard had some easy start which we sprayed onto the intake after the air filter and it run on the easy start but couldn't continue running on its own. It looks like it's not getting fuel. I have half tank diesel in the fuel tank. Could something have exploded from the high pressure rail whilst the engine was off?

Thanks
Denis

Where abouts in the car did the bang come from? Is there any sort of burning smell in there? I have two Hdi's that wont start at the moment because the interior got very damp.

Thanks Peter I think it came from somewhere under the bonnet as I wasn't close to the car at the time. No burning smell either. I disconnected one of the injector fuel feed union connection and no diesel came out when cranking the engine so fuel is not reaching the engine.I just had a friend connect an OBD scanner and the fault code "P0001 fuel volume control circuit open" came up. Could it be a blown fuse/relay?

I know this is a bit far fetched and due to the distance diag might be way off - cam belt snapped?

If it has ive never heard of one going whilst the engine was not running but never say never!

I don't think it is the cam belt as it runs on Easy Start when the Easy Start is spayed into the intake. I will take the top cam belt cover off and have a look though.

If it runs on easy start the valves must be opening. It will use any excuse not to deliver fuel, its an electronic nightmare - two of mine are doing the same.

If it went bang, then there is an electrical fault, check your wiring to the starter motor circuit and battery connections and connections to the pump in the fuel tank.

Problem solved lol. It was the inertia fuel cut off switch lol. I reset it and the car starts now first time. I had a worn lower control arm bush and I think that bush must have popped causing the loud bang which activated the inertia switch. I will check my left side front lower control arm so I can replace it or the bush. The engine is starting first time though. Thanks all :-) .

Well done. Be careful when you replace that bush though, as if it is not correctly fitted it will not last for long (maybe a few thousand miles).

More update. It was the front left side coil spring that had snapped, that explains the almighty loud bang that I heard. Also that explains why the inertia fuel cut-off switch got triggered. The spring broke at about near the top part so not touching the tire. I will buy a new coil spring tomorrow. I blame the poor state of the roads in Abertillery Wales where I had gone visiting and had the coil spring break.
