A fan ? 1000 notes ??, I think you will find better advice here.

That's crap. The fans are not that hard to fix :D

When I was a student (admittedly over 40 years ago now) we just got stuck into our car problems and fixed them ourselves and learned hugely along the way..

A TU head gasket is not at all hard and the Haynes Manual is a good resource and guide to the job. Fixing the fans is not hard either. And you have this forum to advise every step of the way...

Thanks guys,

How serious could the internal damage be? The do it yourself option is appealing to me. After some research, I'm worried about piston damage etc though.

I can't see how there will be any internal damage if it's still running, albeit steamily. It'll need the head skimming, a new headgasket, a new water pump and timing belt/tensioners:

that's a decent quality one, and you'll need this too...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEAD-GASKET-S ... eMke6u26FA

So, for around £150, perhaps allow £200 as you will need a torque wrench and possibly some other tools, including the head skim, your time, and some swearing and cursing, you could have it back on the road.

I've not done one of these, but I'd imagine it'd take a novice with sense and a brain a couple of days alllowing for stuck bolts and being annoyed

Thank you for your detailed post!

Yes, It is running.
Wouldn't a new timing belt require jacking the car up? I've looked at doing a timing belt before and the possibility to mess up made me a bit nervous.

Thank you,

I think Jim did a similar one recently. Jacking it up, putting it on an axle stand, and removing the wheel and wheel arch plastic liner just gives you good accesss to that side of the engine where the belt it. As long as you follow the Haynes manual for pinning the camshaft and crank timing, you'll not go wrong on this engine, it's very simple.

The sense of achievement from doing something like this, and saving yourself 5 or 600 quid is immense too :)

Thanks, I'm going to order a Haynes manual and price up for all the parts I need.

The sense of achievement would be immense yes.. One reason why I feel inclined to take the challenge on :)

I've done a few, initially knowing nothing but not having the option financially of having it done.
Do your research (should be right up your street), take your time, work cleanly and you will surprise yourself!
As you say, the sense of achievement is worth a lot on its own.

The garage are taking the mick at those prices too.

Excellent :D

This web guide I wrote when I did my daughter's 206 cambelt may also assist. The scope for mucking this job up is very low indeed!

Today, I'm going to set about checking the fans operation.

Do I simply unclip these?

Someone has all ready had a go previously it would seem and cracked the grill. Not me haha.

Appreciate some help. Don't want to damage it further.

Thanks,

The center pulls up (get a small screw driver under them), pull the center cap (with a tail) out then the main plug will filt out. The are like a raw plug, the center "tail" spreads the part to make it secure.

One came off easy. Don't know how I will get the broken one off easily.

It's started raining now so it's cut short my time. Out of interest what's best to first do to see where the fan issue is?? I've seen people say they hardware to the battery to elimate the fan itself.
