Handbrake adjustment on 3008

Post by civvie »

On the last MOT I was advised that the reading for the handbrake only just passed the test, as its the good new electronic type any one got any idea how you adjust these things, I haven't ventured under the car yet, its winter!!!
I know on the good old systems you can usually adjust at the Y piece thingy to take up any play but these new systems, I have read someone having problems when they replaced the rear shoes, and don't want to go down that avenue.
At the moment the handbrake seems to hold the car well even on hills so its not that important at least until it gets a bit warmer.

Hi civvie,
Have looked on Peugeot service box 2013 which shows you how to replace cables and actuator then says parking brake packing and calibration I done electronically. I think they must mean with a Lexia.

Thanks Lawns I was starting to think I was Billy no mates over this. Oh dear I was hoping it would be just tweaking the cable a bit with some kind of adjusting nut, do I really have to replace the cable for this.

Hello civve,
Good question as I have not had this problem on my 2011 3008, lets hope Billy has more mates who have the answer.

I doubt there is a problem - if it will hold on a decent hill, then it is working OK. More likely they didn't hold it long enough on the test to let it apply properly. As far as I know there is no adjustment - there are no adjusters on the cables on our C4 Picasso which uses the same system.

The only real issue with these is the pads getting stuck in the calliper carrier. A strip down, clean up and brake grease applied to the pads works wonders.
Make sure you know the correct procedure before taking on the job.

It seems Billy has some mates after all.
Thanks for the input lads, in the back of my mind I suspect the tester hasn't a clue about these brakes, its not as if he could yank the handbrake lever fully up to get the desired result, all he could was pull a little handle, he then had to depend on the car deciding the handbrake was on.
So there is no logical adjustment like the old systems, only a procedure I take it to reset the handbrake.
Lighty can you please give me a clue as to the procedure if its not too involved.

On my old 05 plate Scenic you had to go through an odd procedure operating the handbrake and the ignition so that the handbrake would release with the ignition off. It's probably similar, have you Googled it?

You can repair these systems without a computer, so long as there are no battery issues during the process, so make sure the battery is In good condition before you start.
I know many garages don't have the correct equipment, so do it this way..
This can only work on the early cars with the external handbrake box in the car, the latest Picassos have calipers with the motor built in, so Tec equipment required, same as VW..
All you need to do is release the handbrake manually with the ignition turned off. The car will beep frantically at you at first & then periodically whilst doing the job. Don't start the engine until everything is reassembled , as the handbrake will come on once you switch the engine off again.
Once the brake is released, carry out all the repairs, calipers need to be wound back.
Once all is rebuilt, pump the brake pedal plenty of times, to get the Pistons back out & pads realigned /seated .
Then you can start up the engine, and manually apply the handbrake.
All should perform normally from this point.
