Can anyone help me?

I have a Peugeot 207, 2007 Diesel model which won’t start. I put it into the garage 3 weeks ago as it wouldn’t start and they replaced the starter and a leaking coolant hose. The garage has replaced the starter which was apparently burn out but now the car won’t ignite. Originally the car wouldn’t turn-over but could be bump started but now can’t be started at all. They have sent it to an electrical car mechanic but even they can’t work out what the problem is. The diagnostics test would not give back an accurate result.
After speaking to a Peugeot garage specialist, the guy thinks it might be the ECU which has failed. The garage say they can’t do any more and suggest passing it onto the Peugeot mechanic specialist and doing this directly through him.

I have been charged £450 for the starter and hose pipe replacement plus labour and along with the car being towed to the electrical mechanic. They didn’t charge me for the diagnostics check at the electrical mechanic.

Does this sound like a good deal or have I been ripped off? I have not seen the car in weeks and I’ve spent all this money and it’s still not been repaired. Should I pass this on to the Peugeot mechanic? I’ve heard that it could be another £500+ to get this repaired.

Nobody likes receiving a bill for "repairs" that leave the car in a worse state. It's adding insult to injury when the root problem is not clear.

It may well be that the ECU is faulty, it may also be that the ECU was damaged during the starter test and replacement. There is what I consider a basic fault with many of these in lack of case earthing strap, if you brush the ECU case with a "hot" lead it will melt some internal solder joints out. A giveaway of this condition is the presence of DC voltage between the ECU case and ground.

It sounds like the first place might well have solved one problem, but in so doing, caused another :( Unfortunately there are plenty of garages out there that can do basic mechanical repairs (brakes, exhausts etc) but aren't actually trained technicians or any good with modern electronic based cars.

If you're not into fault finding cars yourself, then the best way forward now probably would be to try a Pug specialist I'm afraid, painful as it is to face putting more money in.

My fiesta van with the same engine needed an ecu and engine wiring loom and injector seals. Cost lots of dosh. Anything goes wrong with modern electrics and it's a bugger

firstly i would ask for the old starter back, and £450 sound a bit steep for just a stater and a hose,

why did they say the car had to go to the sparky through them,
it sounds like they are attempting to get the sparky to cover up whatever they have cauased,

all the auto sparkles i know do a mobile service for non running cars!!!

you could check out the FCF Lexia/Peugeot planet location map in the link below to see if there is a member local to you that will plug there Peugeot planet in to work out exactly what is going on

Sadly this story is all too common. I often get people coming to me when a garage (or even a major breakdown company) has fouled up with their diagnostic and repairs.

They hook up a generic code reader, get a P code and throw a part at the problem. Then when that doesn't fix it, just shrug their shoulders.

Whereabouts was the leaking coolant hose? There are known problems on 207s with leaks getting into the BSI.

Yep. Exactly this.
That was what I meant about not being trained technicians and being able to fault find on modern electronic based cars :(
The comment about there being known coolant leaks into the bsi on 207's is the sort of reason why it would be worth going to a pug specialist instead of a generic garage (you'd expect them to know that kind of thing).

There are good garages out there, it's just unfortunate there are so many bad ones, so you never know what you will get :(

You took your car to the garage to have a fault fixed.They have worked on (fu***** up) your car,given you a bill for £450 and told you to tow it away to have it fixed by someone else. :rofl2: :rofl2: I just can not believe a garage would do that !!! What a bunch of plonkers.
This sounds like either total incompetence or very poor diagnostics,probably both?? Not sure but there is a chance that the original fault and the present fault are connected??
Refuse to pay for the starter job,its way too much any way.Ask them to refit the old unit so you can take your car to a Peugeot expert to start the job again from scratch. Just pay for the water hose job.
If they wont play ball pay up on the understanding that if the present fault has been caused by their incompetence they will be liable to settle the Peugeot experts account.Also ask for the old starter so you will be able to have it checked to confirm it really was "burnt out".
