Does anyone know how you get the top display out to replace the bulbs in it?

What type of display is it (or how old is the car) ?

The 'simple' early display that is just a clock and nothing else, the round cover just pulls off (with a bit of force) and you can then unscrew it to get to the bulbs if needed.

The later one (larger display with date / temp / radio etc) its similar you have to carefully unclip the plastic around it then there are at least two screws in the lower section (take care when removing as they will drop into the dash if you do not pay attention!) then it moves forward enough to unplug it and get to the bulbs.

I think the 'early' one is a single bulb and the later one is two or three bulbs.
Andy.

It's 02 plate, and has the radio display in it, it's maybe 2 inches long by 1/2 inch high. I will have a go later. Thanks.

Yes the later one then. The early ones were just a clock in the middle of it and nothing else (the cover on those popped off a bit easier)
