205 gti engine.

Post by daviemck2006 »

Does anyone know if an engine from a Pug 309 1.9 gti will work on the 205 1.6 gti gearbox? I'm being offered, from the same person either a 205 1.6 gti engine and box with a recent clutch from a rear damaged car or a 309 1.9 gti engine only from a mot failure, box has already been sold. The 1.9 is considerably cheaper and if it will work in our 205 that might be what it gets.

I imagine so I expect the flywheel to be the same.

From what I recall some would fit a 1.6 transmission to the 1.9 to give better acceleration as the 1.6 has slightly lower gearing or a lower final drive ratio (the latter probably)

Yes it bolts straight on,no problem. The 1.9 will probably have an oil cooler, but that`s easily accommodated. It would be best to use the 1.9 ECU as well.
As spider says, the 1.6 box has a lower ratio diff` so it will quick off the line.

Thanks guys. We have decided to keep the car stock so going for the 1.6. Yes its more money, but with a recent clutch and box it should be worth it. That will leave us a spare gearbox which could be kept for spare or sold on. I would expect to change the cambelt and associated bits and it will be an easier straight out and in job, a day to get it going again. I'm actually glad I have persuaded Shaun to stay stock. Surprised he agreed lol. Him and his mates are at Crail Racetrack today with a collection of GTI, RS, ST, etc having fun. I wonder how many of them they have broken [emoji50] [emoji48]
