05 1.6 HDI 307 rad fan and now flat battery

Post by citronut »

my friends 307 as above
the rad fan sometimes runs for quite some time after the engine is switched off, even if the engine is virtually stone cold,

then sometimes the fan does not do this for months, then all of a sudden it starts doing it again,

i do know the wires at the aircon pump are broken, but i would have thought if this had any bearing on thios it would happen all the time

also although might or might not be linked the battery went flat today, there is quite a flash on reconnecting the battery, and this is without the fan running,
Regards, malcolm.

What does diagbox say? Could be a fault in the underbonnet fuse box- they seem to be responsible for all sorts of maladies - like they are the new COM2000 :-D

Its not doing a regen is it?

I've see the fan stay on on a few 90bhp 307s and it turned out to be a sticking relay under the bonnet slam panel. They get quite exposed to the elements.

Lift up the panel for access then disconnect the plugs on the connectors and clean with electrical contact cleaner.

Is it not the fan switch relay in the radiator sticking?

I;m not that up to date on these but perhaps its the same as suggested above (also with other models which have up to three relays on the front panel) a bit of water in them and you have an intermittent rad fan. 406 and 306 was quite common to do this.

Remembered I've got a Haynes BOL for 307 now, and it has the 'tube map' wiring diagrams in it.... So, there appear to be 2 relays - one high speed and one low speed. Both are earth side switched by the engine ECU. Main power comes off the maxi fuses in the underbonnet fuse box unswitched. Switching power for the high speed comes off the ignition switch (so it can't in theory run in high speed with the ignition off). Low speed switch is fed off the underbonnet fuse box - presume this can still be live with the ignition off. So, I think I would find and check the two relays, if they look OK, then I would suspect the underbonnet fuse box. You'd really need to catch it in the act though....

just had this heap in to have another look at it, as it is flattening the battery again,

it is now smoking a lot from the exhaust no metter what revs you have on,

i held it at 3.5K RPM in the yard, and the engine suddenly tried running away with its self ( 4.5K RPM ) and climbing, switched it off quick and it petered out after a few seconds,

so i checked the engine oil level to find it was about 4 or so inch's up the stick :yikes:

i drained a good liter or more out, tried it again, still smoking continuously what ever the rev's on,
moved it bacvk up my yard and whilst maneuvering it ( just on idle'ish ) about to turn it round, the engine tried running away again,

i though by lowering the fluid level in the sump it would stop the smoke and it running away with its self, but no chance,

so is this due to injectors pouring unburned fuel into the combustion chambers then on into the sump ( scrap engine/307 coming up??????)
