When I turn the ignition off and remove the key, the clock, window switch lights and battery charge light stay on but are very dim. with the engine running, I get a reading of 14 volts with everything turned on and 12 volts with everything turned off.
Can anybody think of possible causes, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Les.

Based on what I have read here on the forum I would suggest you take a good look at the ignition switch, as (at a guess) some of it may be sticking together. The voltages seem about right though.

Thanks for reply Hell Razor5543,
I'll check out the ignition switch, I did notice the ignition key getting warm.

I have replaced the ignition switch with a new one, the problems still there.
I've noticed something else now, when you turn the ignition off the battery light and clock remain on but dull, with the courtesy light on the battery and clock light glow bright. The electric windows and wipers operate with no key in the ignition.
Thanks Les

you should be seing more than 12V with engine running and everything switched off!!!,autoles wrote: engine running, I get a reading of 14 volts with everything turned on and 12 volts with everything turned off.

with engine rev's around 2,500rpm and nout switched on you should see between 14 to 14.5V,
this should drop off a bit on switching high current draw items on,

I misread that, I was going with 14V with engine running, and 12V with engine off. Sorry.citronut wrote:you should be seing more than 12V with engine running and everything switched off!!!,autoles wrote: engine running, I get a reading of 14 volts with everything turned on and 12 volts with everything turned off.

I would suggest starting by disconnection of any non-original equipment, such as a stereo.
If that fails to make a difference, leave disconnected while the problem is resolved. Next try disconnecting the alternator leads (disconnect battery first), insulate the eyelets with tape and reconnect the battery. See if that fixes it.
Should there be no change, try swapping in the underbonnet fuse panel from a similar model.

i have seen a case were the battery/charge light stayed on but dim with ignition off, this turned out to be a bad earth between the regulator and the alternator body

I disconnected the leads from the alternator as suggested and that's seems to have done it, so the fault seems to be with the alternator.

I'm going to replace the alternator, so that should solve my problem.
