206 1.6XSI pitfalls?

Post by isisalar »

Hi guys,
Been looking at 206's for the wife lately and had more or less decided that a 1.4 GLX was probably the best spec to get, that or a quicksilver. Spotted a 1.6XSI today and having checked out the details it seems to be a lovely spec, not that much more thirsty and not that much more to tax or insure. The bigger engine would probably not have been thrashed too much and they seem to be better value than the 1.1 or 1.4's. Probably due to the higher insurance for youngsters.
My local Citroen specialist has said that the twin cam engine is a big improvement over the older engines which apparently suffer from head gasket problems so I'm very keen and going to see one advertised locally tomorrow.
Any nasties to look out for? I've been told of the / \ axle problem at the rear, do they have a DMF? Any anti pollution system gremlins?
I did read somewhere the suspension being described as stiff, how would it compare to the recently deceased 1.1 Saxo? After my Xantia it felt like a go cart to me but the wife never complained.
The car's a 2003 and the description says 110bhp which denotes it's the twin cam I'm told, can anyone say when the twin cam was introduced please?
If anyone could say what the complete spec for the XSI is I'd be very grateful so I can check it all works tomorrow.
Been a long slog to get the wife to even go and look at a car, I think she's got too used to being chauffeured around (by me) and she point blank refuses to drive my 'huge' Xantia so if I can get her in this I'll be very relieved.
Cheers
Paul

My brother has got that same engine in his citroen xsara. I was very impressedwhen I borrowed it. At the time my wife had the 1.6 sohc in a 306 which whilst very reliable (155000 miles before it burned more oil than petrol) always used quite a lot of fuel. That later lump 110hp is a lot more frugal and good to drive. It will be pretty rapid in a 206!

He's had his for 2 years and it has been no trouble at all

Good luck with your search .

Well I took the plunge and got the car, a mint condition 51,000 miler in a lovely silver/blue metallic with black and grey pattern sports seats and some lovely unmarked centerless alloy wheels. Took it into BL auto's today for a mechanical once over and pronounced all good but it needs and it's going to get new rubber this weekend. The only things that needed doing were a bulb in the multifunction display and a loose arch liner. It goes like STINK if you rev it hard and according to the trip computer it's very economical driven gently. It shows the consumption over the last 3500 miles to be 34.9 mpg with an average speed of 19 mph, so pretty good and with a bit of motorway driving should easily top 40 mpg. The wife absolutely loves it and even with the hardish ride (compared to the Xantia) so do I. Puts me in mind of the mark 1 golf GTI 16v, or a Lancia fulvia 1.6 HF but with better(lighter) steering.
Any recommendations for the new tyres? 195/55 15's, I'm quite pleased with the Goodyear efficient grip performance ones on the Xantia but there are some Falkens available quite a lot cheaper. Apparently they're a popular choice for C6's so I'd be interested to hear anyone's feedback.
As it had just been serviced with a new cambelt too I re set the service indicator and it's now telling me it's got 18,000 miles odd until the next service, I'm pretty sure when I read the manual it said the interval was 10,000 miles can someone please clarify?
Cheers

I was very impressed with the Goodyear efficient grip on my c4 vts. Amongst the best tyres I have had. My ex mrs had a 206 sport with 15" wheels but it wore 195/50. It had pirellis when we got it and they were rubbish in the wet. We changed them to vredestien winters and they improved the car so much we left them on all year. My daughter swore by Falkens on her astra, but has changed to Nexen n 6000 which she likes, I have Nexen on the front of my c5 and good years on the back, it tends to oversteer in the wet, suggesting they are better than the good years. However they are not efficient grips, I can't remember what they are.
