Thinking of buying a 307 1.6 HDI 90bhp
Afternoon All,
I recently joined this forum seeking advice on Citroen C5's and their 1.6 HDI engine. I'm currently in the market for a new car as I now need a 5 door for the soon to be new arrival..... I've been looking at lots of 308's and so far they're the one to beat, but..... I've just seen this advertised and I do like the look of it!
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
My main question is how is this engine???? Does it suffer from the same problems that the C5 has? Is it more reliable as it's not 110 version? How are 307's in general? Besides looks are they much different to a 308?
Any help or advice on what to look out for will be much appreciated!

Well, it's the same engine as the C5 1.6 in the main. I believe the difference is in the turbocharger (the 110 has a variable vane turbo if I remember properly) but essentially the same internals and potential issues.

I thought that might be the case! It does seem that the 1.6 HDI is one to avoid? But are they really that bad?northern_mike wrote:Well, it's the same engine as the C5 1.6 in the main. Re: Thinking of buying a 307 1.6 HDI 90bhp
This car search is proving to be very frustrating! So..... If I am to get a diesel 307/C5 I should be looking at the 2.0 engine and not the 1.6! Are the petrol 1.6 engines any good in the 307 or 308? On paper they don't look to be very good on fuel!

The best engine is the 2.0. 8 valve but I don't know if they fitted those in the 307. The 1.6 should be OK as long as its been serviced regularly and the oil changed more frequently than specified and doesn't have a history of turbo problems. Ideally you need to take the sump off and check for bits of carbon in the oil. If you get one you need to change the oil every 5 or 6k to keep it healthy, also remove the oil intake filter from the turbo feed.

at least i believe the 1.6 HDI 90 does not have the the dreaded DMF and DPF

I really liked the look of that car and were seriously interested in it, but I have been put off the 1.6 diesel engines from what I've read on here..... It's since sold now anyway

The best 307 to get is the 90bhp 2L model. Get one as close to the 2005 facelift changeover as you can. And go for an LX, GLX or SE model.
Here's a link to my still unfinished 307 buyers guide: http://www.peugeotforums.com/forums/356793-post3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I personally found the facelift model far too sparsely equipped. And regular servicing is the key to these engines. I'm pretty sure that the same engine is in at least three marques, but Peugeot has a longer service interval than the others.

Re: Thinking of buying a 307 1.6 HDI 90bhp
Thanks for the reply.... I've been looking at 307's and 308's.... Mainly petrols as I've always preferred them to diesels! I've been tempted by a couple of diesel's that I've seen advertised but have been slightly put off by the replies on here..... I've since come across this one.....Gibbo_Wirral wrote:The best 307 to get is the 90bhp 2L model. Get one as close to the 2005 facelift changeover as you can. And go for an LX, GLX or SE model.

Don't be put off by diesel engines. True, the 1.6HDi engine of that type has a problem, but the 2.0HDi engines are incredibly reliable. Also, don't be fooled into thinking that more 'prestigious' makes don't make mistakes. Take a look at the BMW N42 engine, and the problems with the timing chain (which, IIRC, is on the BACK of the engine!).

It is the 1.6 HDI that i've been put off, there just doesn't seem be too many 307 2.0 HDI's for sale around me......Hell Razor5543 wrote:Don't be put off by diesel engines. How about this then? I know it is higher mileage than you are happy with, but I know people on the forum will say that for this engine it is not a problem;

It is also (going by your 307 search) not that far from you.
EDIT, this one ain't too bad either;

I know that people say great things about the engine and how long they go for, I just have these thing about high mileage cars I've been looking and talking to the seller of the 1.6 petrol 307 sw above? Seems like a really genuine, great low mileage car!
Re: Thinking of buying a 307 1.6 HDI 90bhp
Both of those look reasonable and decent money too James. That mileage isn't a problem at all. Both might need a belt change , but should have been done already. I'd want to see documentation that they had been.Hell Razor5543 wrote:How about this then?
