loud knocking

loud knocking

hi guys really loud tapping from the front engine area of my daughters 307 2.0 hdi 2001 if i rev the engine it goes away any ideas please

Difficult to tell without hearing it, could be an injector, does it sound like a diesel knock or a mechanical noise?

hi i think it is a mechanical noise i am going to try injector cleaner but i think it's just wish full thinking on my part thanks for the info

Crankshaft pulley would be my thought too - have a look and see if looks rusty on and around the face.

As above, I think you should start in the auxiliary belt area ?? The metal "duel mass" crank pulleys on HDi`s can fall apart and make all sorts of noises. Also if the auxiliary belt tensioner fails it will rattle like bag of nails.At idle you can see it jumping up and down on the belt.
