00 pug 406 hdi alternator light/beep and heater fans not wor

Post by flat-eric »

Hi,
I've got a 2000 406 hdi with battery charging fault flashing up and the heater fans start stopping and then completely stopping. I've tried the things I've read on different forums, disconnect battery and reconnect, new aux belt, heater fan plug, fuses, lumping alternator with a hammer, checking alternator power, and different batteries etc, not necessarily in that order, lol. Anyone else have any ideas to try before changing the alternator as don't have the money for another atm. Been happening for 3 weeks now and starting to get a bit irritating and only so loud I can have the stereo without deafening my kids.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Connect a voltmeter across the battery with the engine running, it should around 14.4 volts, much less than that and you have an alternator problem. The symptoms you give certainly point to a failed alternator, the heater blower is voltage dependent, if it drops to low it will switch off.
