Peugeot gearbox questions

Post by jgra1 »

hi all.

went to see a friend of a friend's 206 yesterday.. previous to her it had one older lady owner and is now only on 66k miles.
clutch replaced 2 years ago, no surprises there,,
present owner complaining of a gearbox issue.,,
box selected fine with engine off, and was ok until engine got warm.. then 3rd was nearly impossible to select, other gears not much better..
no crunching, clutch bite point was where I would expect.. no drag, no slip.

is this likely to be just the wrong type/quantity of oil? I am going to change it on the weekend anyway.
Is the oil change similar to other PSA cars? a drain under diff and a level plug in sideplate? can I fill from reversing or breather?
car is 1.4 petrol 2001 I think

if the oil is not the problem, what else could be? cant think it would be synchro at that mileage, and no crunching at all.. just tricky to select and 3rd, it doesn't go in at all and jumps out, on the first of any attempt?

ideas gratefully received
John

More than likely the wrong oil was put in the box when the clutch was done. However that usually causes selection to be very difficult when cold. An oil change cannot do any harm. I did a 206 recently. I think I filled it through the reverse switch. Make sure there is no drag on the clutch as that could cause the problems you describe.
Jack one front wheel, engage gear and get an assistant to press the clutch. Try turning by hand the wheel you jacked. Try this both cold and hot.

If you have the owners handbook, you might want to check what gearbox oil is recommended. For example, Citroen recommend BV 75W80 oil for the manual gearboxes used by the Xantia (BE3 and ML5T units). Apparently if you use anything else in the BE3 you end up with stripped synchro cones and treacle. You can get 75W80 from Citroen (about £16 for 2l).

Maybe the clutch was changed originally because of the the 3rd gear issue, not because an old dear was driving it. Might be a duff box anyway.

If it's a 1.4 petrol it'll be an MA box. If it's only done 1500 miles I can't see that wrong oil is going to cause a problem. No oil however could be the answer, that would give you those symptoms!
