Take carpety (sp?) trim panel off above pedals from drivers footwell, If I remember correctly its just held in with a couple of plastic mushroom clips etc. Then you will be able to see the pedal itself and its switches.

Really sorry to resurrect an old thread, however the OP on this forum has described an issue I have with my 406 that nobody has been able to replicate or understand in the four years I’ve had my car!

I have found that on some journeys the brakes will apply themselves. The problem first manifested itself some years ago when all of a sudden the car lost power (it began deaccelerating). I took my foot off the throttle and put it back on and the car was fine. It happened a few times after and once when I was being followed by a relative. They said my brake lights came on. I have made journeys since then at night and when the power loss has occurred, I could see the brake lights come on at the rear of the car.

I thought it could be a dreaded servo issue or a vacuum leak, but I can prevent the problem by pulling the brake pedal up with my feet so it must be the switch, especially as I have read that the brake light switch can cause the BSI to adjust the engine speed.

Does anybody know the right switch for a HDi 90 estate (2001)?

And also, OP (if you’re still here) – did you fix the issue??

If you need an original, genuine part number or part diagram, and can't already find the info you need on the Forum, we do ask for a membership upgrade for official parts data as we are in turn charged for this. It will cover you for future part number requests for up to 2 years, so excellent value.

If interested, links are below, then pop your VIN up.

Thank you, I understand the financial aspect as running sites is not cheap. I've also enquired with a Peugeot parts supplier and Peugeot themselves so will advise if I hear back from either and post the part numbers here.

I'd be really interested to know if the OP ever fixed the issue. From my understanding, the brake light switch is located in the passenger area on right hand drive cars behind the glove compartment (as that's the side the servo is in the engine bay). So if I can source a switch replacing it sounds fairly straightforward.

No need to do that, we already have dealer level access to the parts. What I was saying is that if you need part numbers of part diagrams from us, we require a membership upgrade from you to provide this service to you. Not all dealers will provide you with their part numbers.

The advantage of using the Forum to look up part numbers (as opposed to trusting to sellers such as on ebay) is that (because you will have provided the Moderators with the VIN) they will get the correct part numbers for YOUR vehicle.

Thanks both, I provided the parts supplier and my nearest Peugeot dealer with my VIN.

If they don't get back or can't provide, then I'll likely come back here to request with the membership upgrade.

I've just made a donation to the site, as the parts firm still haven't got back to me and the local Peugeot dealer isn't sure!

I have my VIN number ready -- would be great to share this to get the right brake light switch part number.

I'll be on the forum a bit I think, as my 406 is my main car. It'll be taking me, the wife and son on holiday around 800 miles at the end of the month.

Thank you very much. My VIN number is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

I've not yet explored, but I think the switch is located in the high area of the passenger footwell (the left side of the car). I've read they can also be at the top of the brake pedal and a pig to get to.

I think the part number for the switch is 4534.52, but not sure if this is definitely the right one as there seem to be multiple different numbers for similar-looking switches.

If somebody didn't mind checking against my VIN that would be great. It's another check off the job list before we head down to Devon at the end of the month.

Hi

Here's the Brake Switch and also the Clutch Switch (which is no longer available from Peugeot) but I included it just in case.
derby brake switch.PNG
(9) Brake Lamp Switch, part: 453451, £20.90
(10) Cruise Control Switch Regulator, part: 16287P (no longer available from Peugeot), £19.06

However, although I don't have the specifics for this vehicle, I know there have been similar issues with other PSA vehicles where there can be random braking. This has been down to braking caused by the passenger pressing on the pedal bracket lever (on right hand drive vehicles).
ped brack prot.PNG
On the C5 MK II as shown above, the intervention was to fit either A or B (pedal bracket lever protector) according to the version fitted as seen above.

As I said I don't have the specifics for the 406 but I expect it to be a similar intervention. So my advice would be to contact your dealer and tell them there is a Technical Service Bulletin under the 'Pedal Bracket' section of 'ServiceBox that is titled: "Flat spot on acceleration/hesitation/lack of power/unwanted operation of the brake lights",

They may be able to advise if there was a modification or advise you further.

Thank you so much for this -- I'll track down and order that part today. I'm glad that there is awareness of this issue out there! It took me a good while to realise it was connected to the brake lights.

My problem manifests itself regardless of anybody in the passenger seat (most of the time it's just me anyway!). Lifting the brake pedal up has cured it on a number of occasions (before I need to press the pedal again) so I'm convinced it's in the pedal switch. I'll mention the service bulletin to the local dealer though in case they can recall it.
