XU/HDI family motor + 4wd platform?

Post by nametooshort »

Hello again everybody.

This is a bit of a strange question I know, but does anybody happen to know, were there any vehicles which had the XU/HDi family but also had 4wd?

I know there was a 4wd Berlingo and possibly a few others available, but I am not sure if they were done by a 3rd party company.

I am just thinking, it would be cool to get a 4wd setup in something like a 205, it would be like the ultimate super-utilitarian useful car. Getting a rear diff and suspension and stuff is not so hard (plenty of cars you can steal one from) but a 4wd transmission that fits the XU family engine block without a conversion plate, that would be a challenge. I wonder if a Berlingo could be used as a donor, unless other cars came as 4wd? Anybody know?

205 T16 although that did not have the XUD and the engine was not where you'd expect it I think.

There were some 405 4wd models (rare) though, apart from the Mi16 there was I'm sure a basic GRx4 model with the 1.9 (petrol) unit as well.

Agree about Hens Teeth.

From what I can recall I've only ever seen on 405 Mi16 x4 in, I'm aware of the normal model x4 as well but never seen one 'in the metal'

And I used to think the 205 Japanese (automatic and with standard AC!) GTi or Gentry was rare... but they would appear about once a year typically.

I had a 405 Mi16X4 way back in 1994 when I was a boy racer,a fantastic car at the time.It had "active self leveling" Citroen BX rear suspension with an electric oil pump in the boot.No matter what you had in the boot or on the back seat it would stay level.Limited slip diffs front and rear.I had it re chipped and played with,Speedlines with 205 Yokohama`s,it would do 150mph and stick to the road like glue. The down side was it was very complicated and difficult to work on,very heavy, slow off the line, did 20-25mpg,and was very vulnerable underneath,I cracked the transfer box hitting something.
If you want a Peugeot 4X4 that`s bomb proof find a 504 0r 505 Dangel.

They are a bit thin on the ground as said although its nice to hear from someone who owned one.

I'm also pleased you've picked a 50x series model instead of the brand new ones for a 4x4 choice for PSA, I'd concur too.

I think they are meant to be disabled as the global (total) quota is set low. Possibly accidentally enabled during last upgrade. Best to just upload to photobucket or suchlike and link to it really.

That reminds me, years ago we had in my workshop this 4X4? I can not remember its make but I think it was built in India,it was a real off roader like an old Landrover and had a Peugeot 505 engine & gearbox together with lots of other Peugeot parts. Not sure of the 4 wheel drive but I expect it was from the Dangel estate I mentioned earlier.

Sounds like it was a Mahindra. They made a Jeep copy 4x4 thing with Pug diesel bits.
