hi all
recently changed engine in a '97 306 Td, all went well, fired up, drove home, n next day drove back to finish up..car performed as expected
at the end of the day on the way back home I punched it at a junction and there was a very slight woomp and the car lost power and started chucking out light black smoke on foot down
together with a very noisy injector type rattle..
I can longer feel or hear the turbo..
It accelerates through the range but with no "kick" to it..Pulling away from stop requires more than usual throttle..
It doesnt smoke whilst idling and is only when u put your foot down
Iv checked intercooler for air leaks as well as turbo hoses and all seems well..i cannot hear any wooshing of air from anywhere..
disconnecting the air filter made no difference
pulling the pump boost pipe off the intercooler seemed to stop the smoke on foot down but didnt affect performance or rattle
Iv looked at the gate valve on turbo whilst revving and it is not moving, although it appears in the closed position rather than the open..
Does this only operate with the car movng n under load?
Does a blown turbo/stuck gate create a rattle such as this?
Can a blocked 'CAT also produce a rattle n stop the turbo from operating?
Im suspecting gate valve and or turbo but...
You help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

could you have a peep at the turbine?

Have you taken the inlet pipe off the manifold and tried it? Is the rattle a diesel knock or mechanical noise?

Hi again, thanks for the replies..
Iv switched the turbos (which was a mission) to no avail..both turbos appeared in good nick..
still getting rattle and lack of power and smoke underload..
Iv switched injectors to no avail also. but did notice No2 injector had a very oily tip where as the others were dry n clean..

If so, yes removed at the manifold and ran it.. made no change
Im leaning towards it being a mechanical top end rattle as opposed to diesel/injector rattle..
I'll try running it with the rocker cover off n see if i can see anything..
And maybe get a compression test done..
Wondering whether a valve or tappet might be at fault..
Strange because it starts n idles as normal except for the rattle but as son as u pull away theres no power there..
Will post a vid if any help..

Its very difficult to diagnose a noise without hearing it, can you put a recording on YouTube?
