Looking at 307's

Post by patrickgledhill »

Hi guys, ive got the 406 hdi and lovin it. My brother is looking at getting a 307 hdi... i have no experience with the 307's and know nothing about them. are they generally a good car or riddled with potential issues? anything to look out for?
Any info would be great

I find they scan up "cleaner" than the C4. No idea why that is.

Later ones better than earlier models.

Check its had all its recalls done.

91 205D-Turbo, gone but still missed
02 106D, TUD5B, gone but not really missed apart from the MPG

The 406 is a very reliable car but it seems the newer models not so, they appear to be getting more complicated by the minute, the 406s have no DPF, at least the 2.0. ones don't. I would have another one of those.

All I'll add in my experience the 307 was the one that we would see the most of... ;)

Purchase / obtain Lexia if not already in possession of one.

As above check recalls have been done, some are electrical, ABS wiring one in particular I think if it needs doing although its highly likely it will have been done a long time ago (you don't want to know why)

Later models (the minor shape change around 05/06 I think?) have better feedback from customers from what I remember.

Very late models they changed the rear disc arrangement, it comes with a bearing if I remember correctly so rear discs are very expensive.

I think the 307 got Peugeot a bad name, full of faults. Get your mate to buy a 406 lovely car, they are way ahead of 307`s.

I think 307,s are fine, 406 getting too old now. Thing is you can pick up a 307 very reasonable now, I would get a 110 , get the Dual mass changed for a normal one and get the particul;ate filter removed, and you have a very good car for very little money.

If its got a DMF that IS the normal one for the car. The engine has been designed around a DMF and fitting one of the "solid kits" is not the way to go.
DMF`s have been discussed to death here and on every other forum.YES,they have problems but doing away with it can create other problems.

I used to be a staunch critic of DMF's for their unreliability but having owned two 2.0. Hdi's with the abomination fitted for some time I am beginning to soften my attitude, both of my cars are at around the 200,000 mile mark and as far as I know the DMFs are original as are the clutches.

I think that like a lot of reliability problems, its mostly down to how they have been driven. I drive very gently, the results are that tyres last me around 30k and brake pads probably longer and I get excellent fuel consumption figures. I did my fair share of boy racing when I was a kid I like to relax when driving now and it sure pays - if you can stand it :x

Get highest you can find - LX, GLX, SE.

Avoid 110 bhp - DMF, DPF, in-tank fuel pump

Common Problems, all very well documented and easy to sort yourself:

ABS sensors
ABS behind wheel arch, not always well protected from elements
Airbag lights
Drivers side carpet shrink
Clutch judder
Engine mounts
Electrical problems (especially if a replacement windscreen has been badly fitted)
Exhaust back box and brackets
Fan (cooling)
Heater failure (resistor pack)
Hesitation / judder when accelerating
Indicator stalks (COM2000)
Instrument bulb failure
No power (MAF)
Electronic oil gauge incorrect
Temperature gauge can fail
Wheel arch liners
Locking wheel nuts

Thanks guys for all the info, they do sound a wee problematic for us, the 307s sent the cheapest here either... I've got the 406 and its going well apart from the air con which in the last few days has degassed itself..
