Peugeot 106, 1.5XLD R reg 1997 rear axle enquiry

Post by avamotor »

Hello Kind members of FCF,

Hopefully 106 drivers or at least some of you, may have had some experience with the rear beam/axle not behaving as it should.

I jacked the rear of car up on the weekend to improve the parking brake that only just "scraped through" the MOT on the parking brake. The brakes were easy to replace but on jacking the individual sides i noted that unlike the passenger side (which seems to work okay and "absorb" bumps ect as it moves on the beam) the driver side appears to be completly rigid and I couldnt shift it.

Am i correct in thinking the beam has ceased up on the drivers side and a replacement beam from the scrappers is in order?

also would any beam fit from any MK2 Peugeot 106 with 4 stud brake drums?

I suppose this explains why the kids are sat in an entirely place between leaving home and getting them to school as every bump makes it feel like a "pimp mobile!" with the car bouncing way too high over every little bump and speed humps are terrible but only on the drivers side.

Look forward to the advice from anyone who can help.

Thank you.

Wouldn't this be more likely to be a seized damper? I would remove the damper and see if the trailing arm can move again.

I'd temporarily unbolt the shocker too just to rule it out.

The axle's are mostly swappable. You'll want a drum one (most are apart from GTi)

Am very surprised you do not have four stud hubs though on an R plate. I though it was only MK1's that had three stud hubs.

Only real annoyance with axle swap is swapping all the brakes over, you may need to swap the backplates too as chances are the "replacement" axle has a different brake setup and the backplates are different between braking systems.

If it turns out you need an axle, I think one from a Saxo would be the same. Trouble is most axle beams in the breakers now have shot bearings with the wheels leaning inwards and the tyres touching the wheel arches. If you intend keeping the car for the future - as my daughter did with her Xsara, I can recommend http://www.sspengineering.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... They rebuild axles on their premises and can do mail order or fitting.

Your description is definitely seized radius arm bearings, shocks do not seize. I agree with JohnD and I`ve used Mountjoy axles a number of times. It all depends on the car,how good it is and how long you want it to last.
If you go 2nd hand any 106/Saxo will fit as long as its 4stud/drums,you pay the money and take a chance??

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the replys, my R reg does have 4 stud drums but if i were to choose the 2nd hand route, how do you test for dodgy bearings on the rear radius?

apart from the up and down will the movement (essential really) there should be no left and right play, and look for indicators of failures from bold tyres on the inner wall and a lack of paint on the car inner wheelarch!

So as long as i dont go GTI, but do go with 4 stud drums preferbly with a similar brake set up to present and hopefully test it before hand to see bearing are okay, could be slightly better as the new axle prices are more that the car is worth!!!!

I will try to get to some breakers yards and start testing for bad bearing and hopeful movement!

Most breakers will have axles removed already. The best way to check it is with the shocks removed, then you can feel if the radius arms are nice and "springy."
Also look carefully around the oil seal where the radius arm enters the cross tube for tell tale "red dust".That is a sign of the bearings dry and braking up.
By the way,a disc brake axle will fit. Of course it will have to be complete with all discs, calipers etc,and you will have to change the hand brake cables and make up a new metal brake pipe.
