Back at last !!

Post by harryjoe »

Hi all.

Having spent some time away from FCF, I have now returned after purchasing another Frech car !! :-D

Previously owning XM's And BX's, some of you my remember me taking Phil's Xm off him that he brought back from Switzerland and show at Little Horwood two years ago.
I purchased a Fiat X1/9 for fun !
Puts a smile on my face every time it comes out :-D although not in the rain

I have had a C5 2.2 HDI Estate since selling that beloved XM and my BX Athena to which I regret selling both to this day.
Having enjoyed the C5 for 18 months, but got very bored with it after having done 26k in one year, now changing jobs with a company car, i have resorted to buying a 1995 1.8 405 GLX estate.
I had one of these many years ago and loved it !! it went on and on, this car has covered 140k, but with one owner and full Peugeot history up until it's last service in March 13.
Unfortunatley it's white ! :( and looks like a bloody Taxi but ! :x but il'l cope with that.
Bought for £400 with MOT until next May no advisories and full tax, and is in near showroom condtion!

I will sick some pictures up tomorrow, but just thought I would say hello agian after some time away.

Look forward to picking some brains again as I wiil no doubt have to do a the enevitable problem arise in a French sort of way !!!

Yes, welcome back. I have a foot in both camps with a C5 an XM and a 406 Hdi, brilliant car - apart from the ride, nice handling and fantastic economy (2.0. Hdi)

Nothing wrong at all with a good 405 :)

The estates even have sensible rear drum brake arrangements its the saloon has has the curious horseshoe clip arrangement. I ended up making a tool to save time with them.

No, I had a 405 estate, the last all mechanical Peugeot, nice to drive, easy to work on and virtually indestructible. We have quite a few down here still in remarkable condition. Not quite as good as the 406 though - not the Hdi one anyway.

Hi Malcom, Peter.

Yes Yes ! I know it's not a Citroen

But will be after another XM very soon, the 405 i have isn't an oil burner  , but never the less is in superb condition, (after a deep polish today), but is a 1.8 petrol. years ago i had an H plate diesel estate and love it, as Peter says they are bullet proof, I recall mine had neraly 210k on it when I sold it, and with no real issues.

I am surprised how pokey it feels for a 1.8.

It does have a slight knocking noise on the front end, not really had a proper look at it yet, do these have drop links ? if so I guess they need changing  and I have noticed it seems to run a little hot ( if the guage is anthing to go by ) the fan kicks in only when the guage is showing around the 100 mark, but very quickly returns to just below 90, but it seems to creep up again quite quickly, should I order a new water temp sensor ?

But apart form that, I will no doubt be over at some point Malcom

Thanks agian for the warm welcome on my return.

Yes they have drop links slightly different design to other models though (well comparing to say a 406 etc)

Could be bottom ball joint (screwed into hub, easy to change with the tool not too difficult without) but if struggling take hub off car and place on bench for convenience.

Fan should come on at 90c which is the middle of the gauge, normal running temp around 80 give or take a little bit.

Probably worth giving the coolant a good flush out if its not too new, watch for the brass bleed on the thermostat housing if fitted (cannot remember if the 1.8 8v XU has this) may well be lazy thermostat.

Hi Malcolm.

Yes the BX Athena was a lovely little car, that went really well and was in good condition.

Image

Not sure if Iv'e done that correctly

I sold it on ebay to a Citroen nut up country somewhere! who said he was going to use it as his daily driver.

I didn't have an other car up until I purchased the X1/9, which I still have and love driving.
But I keep looking for another XM, god I miss my old one.
So I will be keeping the X1/9 indefinatly, and will soon be on the hunt for an XM.

Well, here are a few XMs to look at, although I think that there are some people on the forum who like the look of the V6;

Yes Iv'e kept my eye on Ebay, and have seen these, it is an estate i'm want next time, and the one on Ebay is gorgeous, and I could afford it only if sell the X1/9, and that an't happening.

So just going to keep an eye out for a cheaper estate, that may need a little work ! as the exxy is now done and complete.

The picture of my X1/9 was when I first got it last year, looks a bit different now !!
