306 - 1.4- Engine management system fault?

Post by Tel » 15 Oct 2003, 21:01

Hi all’
Peugeot 306 - 1.4 – 1999
My friend has the above car & all of a sudden it has developed a fault.
The fault is that the car will suddenly just rev itself up to around the 1500 revs mark, this happens when you are driving as well as when the car it ticking over.
The car has also just become difficult to start from cold.
I have not personally seen the car, the description that I have given was passed to me over the phone so I can’t really add much to it.
The car has been to a Peugeot dealership & they have diagnosed the problem to be the “Engine management system computer brain” they say that to fix it will be around the £700 mark [:0]
I haven’t had much to do with Peugeot cars in the past & any that I have worked on have been Diesels so am I correct in thinking that the car will just need the black box brain replaced?
I know that there are specialists that deal in fixing the computer brains for certain vehicles & offer them on an exchange basis (New for old)
Can any1 point me in the right direction to find such a service for this vehicle, or indeed offer any other advice.
Much appreciated.

sounds very like a stepper motor fault to me,but if it is the ECU i dont know anyone off hand who repairs them, try a search on google, but the code for the transponder imobiliser will have to be programed into it (if it has an imobiliser that is)

Hi & thanks for the advice.
Yeah I’ve done searched on Google & found a few places that do Exchange / repair ECU’s but I just wondered if there were any recommended dealers.
I’m afraid you’re going to have to educate me to what a stepper motor is & what it does?

It Controls the idle speed when the engine is cold. I think it opens the throttle a little when the engine is cold. When the engine is started from cold it idles at about 1500 rpm, with engine warm it should drop to about the 800 rpm range.

Hi & thanks for all of the advice & education so far [;)]
Seemingly my friend (well it’s the wife’s friend at work) has a printed diagnosis from the Peugeot dealers who checked the car. I haven’t yet seen this myself but it’s reported to say something along the lines of replacing the ECU along with the coil, is this the ignition coil they are talking about?
On one of the sites that I found when I searched for company’s that supply ECU’s I can remember reading something about changing the coil otherwise the new ECU would have a very short life, does anyone know anything about this? (Can’t seem to find the site again)
I’m assuming the dealer would have checked the car with a diagnostic machine to come up with this diagnosis, so is logical to assume that if the fault had just been the stepper motor the machine would have shown this?
Sorry for all of the questions but I’m trying to play the Good Samaritan with this problem, as I hate to see anyone pay what to me seems to be a ridicules price to cure a simple problem.
I’m confident that if indeed he ECU & the coil are the problem these could be replaced for a lot less than the £700 & odd quid that the dealers are quoting.

I have a 98 S reg 1.4 306 and had exactly the same problem about a year ago, same symptons every thing!!! It is a COMMON!! fault with the Sagem system on the 98 1.4's!!! After 98 they went back to Bosch....
Took it to my local Peugeot Dealer who told me that i would need a new ECU, coil pack, stepper motor and adaptor lead. At a total of approx £1000!!!!!! They wouldn't give me the print out from the diagnostic printer because they said it was in french and i wouldn't be able to understand it, so my argument was do all of their fitters fluent in french!!!!!! And they Charged me £108 for telling me this!!!!! I was well brassed off!!!!
So i lived with it for a while then it got undrivable, so my dad reminded me that there was a small citroen garage (Woodlinkin (thinks that's spelt right)Citroen Centre, on the A610 neat to Nottingham Ikea) and my sister had recently bought a car from them and they sempt reasonable so i took my car up there and they gave me a courtesy car where as peugeot didn't!!!!
They rung me the next day and told me that it was what peugeot had said but they could get the ECU Reapired and replace the other parts (Stepper motor, and coil pack) Note no adaption lead.......because it is built into the new coil packs to prevent it happening again!!! And the parts that they used were genuine pug/cit/talbot parts!!!! At 1/2 the price that Pug dealership said!!!! £465 is cost me and i got a courtesy car from them and Peugeot Dealership wouldn't entertain it!!!! There was no need for the immobiliser to be reset, becuase the ECU was repaired it didn't do anything to that side of things....
If you are interested i can get the number for you....

I must admit I tend to agree with Wheeler on this and think this is more of a stepper motor problem and not the ECU, Its very interesting to read that the dealer want to change the ECU and the Coil, sounds more like they are not sure. As a quick check its probably worth unplugging the connection to the stepper motor cleaning and making sure the connections are good and firm. Just one question is this a Bosch or Magnetti Marreli Stepper motor fitted?

Hi all,
Nathan,
Glad to hear that you managed to get you problem fixed for a lot less than £1000, it just goes to show how much profit the dealers make on some / most jobs they do.
The Citroen garage that you mention certainly sounds like a good place to know of & the price of the repair sounds great compared to the original quote.
I’m up north (Newcastle) so it’s a bit far, but thanks for the offer of the phone number.
Despite my efforts to play the Good Samaritan & save her some money the girl who owns the car has decided to trade it in, apparently she was offered a very good price against a new one.
This wouldn’t have been the way I would have played the situation
but never mind!
Andy,
I’m sorry but I have no idea what make the stepper motor is, as I never actually got to look at the car.
If I had been able to get hold of the car I would have had a good mess on before embarking down the ECU / Coil route.
In one of my earlier posts I mentioned a site that undertook ECU repairs, I have managed to find the site again, there’s some good info on the site, so for anyone that’s interested here’s the link.

I would just like to thank everyone for the advice & help that has been offered. [;)]
Regards to all.

I was told buy the independant garage that the coil pack develops a fault and frazzels the stepper motor that then blows some resistor thing in th ECU, but it can be repaired!!! Don't let then ever tell you otherwise!!!!
Thanks for that link to the ECU site, may come in useful!!!!
