peugeot 206 1.9 diesel and I mount belt engine

Post by ektor »

I have a peugeot 206 1.9 diesel and I mount belt engine by my self. I refer to peugeot manual to do this and as shown in the manual I mount the belt. How can I test that everything is alright before I start the car? Thank you

Get a spanner on the crankshaft pulley and rotate the engine two complete turns to make sure it turns freely, if you can't turn it with a spanner replace the wheel, put it in 5th gear and turn the wheel. If it turns freely it should be OK.

Hi, do you mean the timing belt?

Normally if you set the timing belt tension, the simple test is to grip the belt in the centre of its longest distance between pulleys, and twist sideways with your thumb and first finger. You should not find it easy to twist the belt more than 45° in this manner.

Never turn the engine backwards with your tools - particularly on some models of diesel, this can cause big problems!

To check the belt is fitted correctly, remove the locking pins and rotate in the correct direction, four complete turns of the crank - then make certain you could easily install the locking pin set again. If it is all OK, then re-install the other belts without the covers, and start the engine. If it makes a new noise, whining like a supercharger, the timing belt is too tight. Remove a very small amount of tension and try again.

When it is nice and quiet, you are ready to reassemble with all covers and accessories.

if you turn the engine with a spanner you stop if you feel the piston coming up against a valve, you only need to turn the crank two complete turns,

if you turn the engine with the wheel and in gear, you need it in 2nd gear not 5th gear,
i feel the trouble turning with the wheel you dont have smooth enough control/feel, so you might not feel if the pistons contact the valves

yes

as long as you have turned the crank through two full turns, then re/fit all the locking pegs/pins,
cam, fuel pump, and flywheel through hole behind starter motor

and the belt tension is good,

also at the very least re/fit the crank pulley even if just for test purposes, otherwise the cam belt can slide off
