Post by froggy »

Hi, my wifes 306 (1.4) I need to draw air out of the system on a monthly basis! it runs fine for about a month, then it runs too hot, let the air out of the system and its fine for the month. anybody got ideas why this is happening? many thanks in advance Terry. :(

The most likely cause is a leaking head gasket.

oil looks ok, yep using a little water. just noticed "mayonaise" type substance, on inside oil filler cap. guess that confirms water in engine and head gasket leak? cheers Terry.

at least the 1.4 TU lump head gasket job is very very easy, unless its been severely over heated this can cause the wet liners to drop,

is there signs of oil down the front cam belt end face of the block, below head joint level, as this is the usual sign of head gasket failure on the TU lump

I'd agree air is possibly headgasket, now you've confirmed there's oil on the 'shelf' (as I call it) its about confirmed.

Easy to do though as Malcolm has said, usual care to not knock the liners about (1.6 is cast block and does not have this concern, 1.4 and 1.1 do) BOL shows two 'hooks' to rock the head off, the dealer tool is similar actually just to bent rods. To be honest if you don't turn the crank with the head off should be OK though I guess. See BOL for 'clamp' if needed.

I'd recommend the water pump while you are there as you'll have to drain the coolant anyway. The single tensioner roller might be worth changing as they are not expensive.
