peugeot 308 and bio diesel
The missus wants to save some money on her running cost as she is also now working as a delivery driver I ran my C5 2.0hdi on 100% bio last summer but stopped over the winter due to it becoming hard to start in the cold. She has a 308 1.6hdi I know Peugeot say 30% bio is ok in this engine but before we start running it on 100% bio I just want to make sure it is ok. The C5 had over 200k on the clock and was worth next to nought so I wasn't too worried if something went tits up but she is worried so just want to check before we fill it to the brim.
We can get bio from 2 places where I got it last summer £1.19/ltr been running for years or a new place £0.95/ltr just opened about a month or so ago. The cheaper place is closer but not long started so dono where to get it now?

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
I would ask over on vegetableoildiesel.co.uk to see if anyone else has experience. There are also some basic tests that you can do on biodiesel to see if it's made properly. The sad fact is that a lot of commercial stuff is rubbish, which is part of the reason BD has such a bad reputation. Maybe look into brewing your own?

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
I have looked into making my own but the chemicals involved scare me plus some of the reactors need heating and I don't have power at my lock up and no space at home. I think I will stick to the known tried and tested company rather than the new start up at least I know I can get a receipt for the accountant

Hi
I have a 308 2.0 HDi and use B20
The advise I have is not to use B100 due to the quality of Peugeots parts not being up to the use of B100

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
Is the 2.0 not the same engine in the early c5 as I had mine on 100% bio for about 5k before it got too cold and I sold her. Any idea what parts fail?

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
Hi
Yes it will 'run' on B100 but [I'm told] eventully there will be problems due to component failure or issues. I was told by a 307 owner the plastic fuel filter housing will eventully start to break down and also the injector seals are probematic. He said stick with B30 and it will last a lot longer
Bear in mind Peugeot [in Europe] say the 308 is good for up to B30 not B100.
Also note the biodiesel needs to meet the EU standards as opposed to 'home brew' I would check with your biodiesel supplier that they can demonstrate their product meets the EU standards
I'm using commercial grade B100 mixed in tank to B20. The product I have is lab tested to meet spec

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
Right I am happy to run on 100% as I only buy cheap cars and keep them a couple of years or till it is too expensive to mot (the bangernomics principle) but I know the missus wants to keep this going for a many more years so might just tell her to stick to dino juice.
Fuel filter housing and injector seals would prob be a pain to replace and not worth the hassle with the mileage she covers 7-8k unlike my 20k+ so replacing parts is already expected

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
There was a report on bio fuel in the Institute of Road Transport Engineers one or two years ago. (Look it Up)
1) bio fuel does not burn so well and what does not burn gets past the piston rings and helps the thicken the engine oil - not good on a 1.6 hdi - this means oil change intervals must be halved and long term oil sampling is a must.
2) It is also hydroscopic which causes corrosion problems with pumps and injectors.
3) It is highly corrosive again problems with injectors and pump, also certain rubber seals and plastics will be affected.
4) It tends to grow a strange slime in the fuel filters so filters should be changed regular.
The report went into great detail and I have only summarised is but yes you can run 100% bio but do not expect to get away scot free - maintenance intervals should be increased and do expect some problems

Re: peugeot 308 and bio diesel
bio fuel and bio diesel are 2 completely different things.
bio fuel - eg SVO or WVO is basically filtered oil.
bio diesel is WVO that was been filtered - then `washed` with chemicals and is called an alkyl ester
