806 Auto box problem

Post by KevMayer »

I have a friend with a Peugeot 806 with a 5 speed auto box (Y reg). I'm pretty sure it's 2 litre petrol.

If it's 5 speed it won't be the AL4 or the 4HP20.

Which box is it.

He has problems when it gets to 5th gear there's a jump and it goes into limp home mode.

Any idea what might be causing this?

thanks.
Cheers, Kev

Sorry this is no help but I was not aware there was a five speed autotransmission on the 806, 807 maybe but that's a few years newer.

806 automatics were very rare anyway, I cannot recall seeing more than a couple in 10+ years and usually they were the special editions, full leather etc.

Hello spider,

I've struggled to find reference to a 5 speed auto on the 806.

I looked on Parkers website and they list a 5 speed auto on the top of the range GTX model. All the other 806s are 4 speed with, I assume, the AL4 box.

There's a few 5 speed auto 806s for sale on Autotrader. My friend also refered to a problem on his 806 in 5th gear. So, there must be a 5 speed but which one.

At a guess I'd say it's a 5HP20, but, that's a guess.

ZF manufacture the 4HP20 and they do make a 5HP20, at least I found reference to a 5HP20 when I googled it.

I'll check my tech data assuming I can get some coal in the server and get it fired up, I'll post back in a few minutes if I can see anything of interest or otherwise.

The only one I can see listed for an 806 is the AL4...

I also look on servicebox and that's AL4, that's all it showed. Looking at a couple of engine variants (I did that for the 806 too) for the 807 it again shows an AL4 and on a few an AM6.

Not sure what to say, I'm not going to say are you sure its an 806 not an 807

I've been in the 806 today and helped change the gearbox oil.

I can now confirm that It's an 806 2.0 LX with a 4 speed AL4 auto box.

I connected my laptop to it with Peugeot Planet running. It's the first time I've used PP2000 and so I fumbled around to find out what it can do.

We went for a drive and monitored live oil pressures and gear selection.

It went through 1st and 2nd ok and the pressures roughly matched the expected pressure. It went into 3rd and it still looked ok. It appears that when it tried to change to top gear there was a big discrepancy between expected pressure and actual pressure.

Expected was 21 bar, actual was 11.5 bar.

Any ideas what's causing this?

Change the pressure regulation and converter lock up solenoids. Reflash gearbox ECU to latest version. Job done.

Thanks for the reply Addo.

Where can we get new electrovalves from and where do we get the new software?

EDIT: It looks like these are main dealer only.

Anyone running full house Lexia can do the reflash, solenoids are usually cheaper off Renault (P/N 7701208174) if you want dealer parts. Might be worth asking how much Mackie or JPAT can sell you a pair for.

You had me worried until I noticed that, as I could find no record of a 5 speeder in that model.

The changeover's fairly intuitive, be sure to have good quality Torx bits and clean well around the gasket area of the case first. When refitting the valve block take care to index the toothed quadrant's pin (under it) into the parting of the shift actuator slide valve.

Also when fitting and torquing down the toothed quadrant's spring arm, have a helper hold the gear lever in N but pulled slightly towards D. This counteracts the tendency of the spring arm to pull the selector slightly too far forwards and throw the multiswitch into panic mode.

After fitting new solenoids the gearbox is working smoothly.

However, we used Peugeot Planet today to double check the gearbox ECU software version and we found that it's the old software (as expected). On tickover the oil pressure 'expected' should be 3 bar, we saw 5.4 bar, so, the new pressure regulator solenoid is modulating and the old software is resulting in a pressure slightly higher than calculated.

The software version at the moment is 0F01.

The latest (new) version should be 0F02. The next job is to get the software upgraded to the new version. We've had a quote of £70 to do the update at a Peugoet main stealer.
