FAP. ..or not ?

Post by xantiasmiff »

I recently bought a 407 2.0hdi Zenith, having previously owned 2 Xantias. I presumed that it had a FAP fitted. However , having checked the engine code (6D RHRG/SF) with the owners manual it states no FAP fitted. Can any one enlighten me? The first job I did was to change oil and filters. I used Mobil 5-30 synth ESP which is a low saps oil. Will this oil still be ok if no FAP fitted . Thanks.

I didn't know the 2.0HDi 138 16v was ever fitted without a FAP. I would guess at it having one.

Yes, the oil is fine for with or without FAP.

Just been in touch with local Peugeot dealer. Apparently some 2.0 hdi models (X-Line and Zenith) were not fitted with FAP. Mine is one of them. :-D

Good to know.

Is it the 136 though ? , I would of thought that would of had one. Although the 110 does not in most cases not sure if they fitted the 110 to the 407. The 110 is (slightly) more durable / reliable though although any initial problems would of been ironed out by now so not a concern.

EDIT... I think I'm just not a fan of 16v HDi units vs their 8v counterparts, simply as problems seem to occur more with the more complicated units (the 110 1.6 especially it seems) although please ignore my post if it reads badly it was not intended to. :) , was just pointing out that no FAP *may* indicate its the 110 which is no bad thing anyway.

No problem Spider. Each to their own  Mine is the 2.0hdi. There is a post on the 407 owners forum about sans dpf 407's. Peugeot apparently dropped the use of FAP on X-line and Zenith models and used the savings to uprate spec. Mine has full leather interior, with heated, electrical adjustable front seats. Don't know wether it applied to all models, or just for a limited period of time.

Good to know. :) , having no FAP is a good thing in a way, I suspect its more like the EGR in that it was deemed to be needed for EU regulations however not having one will not really effect emissions in any measured way to my knowledge. Certainly not a on diesel engine anyway. Ultimately if its not there, it cannot break / cause problems.

Do you have the closure feature ? , if a front window is left open and you lock (or deadlock) it will close it. I'm not sure if all models had this or not. It was only on higher spec 406's.

I found the ride better in the 407 compared to the 406, there was less "life on the ocean waves" boat effect, albeit at a slightly more complicated suspension setup with the wishbones however they are relatively conventional so no problems as such.

Not sure about 'Closure Feature ', will have to check. You're right about one less thing to go wrong.Means more money for bottom balljoints, Abs sensors and droplinks.Lol.

That is very interesting indeed, something I did not know. It does seem off, how they distribute these FAP/DPF filters. Why put it on some and not others? Surely the ones without should be in a difference emissions legue, though its C02 anyway ... so it makes no difference.

Oddly the 1.6HDi in all cars I know of had a DPF filter, but Citroen did not fit it to the C5 'Design' spec, a special edition based on the LX, which did have a DPF filter.

The 110 2.0HDi 8v was never fitted with a DPF, unless it was in the Peugeot 307, then it did have one.

The 2.0HDi 110 8v was never fitted into the 407, not in the UK anyway. The 1.6HDi 110 replaced the 2.0 110.

The later 16v units are great, look after them and they will be good for 300K. Well, the engine will, you'll have no doubt had a few DMF clutches and DPF filters by then  The 1.6HDi is prone to take a disliking to its turbo if servicing is left too long. However service it regularily and its a good unit. The 2.0HDi 138 16v is an excellent engine, I have heard of very few problems so far.

My car does have the 'closure feature', spider. Just checked. As regards the ride, I'm getting used to it now and find it ok. Looking into this FAP lark further, the BOL for the 407 lists the 1.6hdi as having two engine codes. One with FAP fitted, the other not. No references for the 2.0HDI sans FAP engine code though.

Yep Zeniths and X Lines do not have the FAP. Mine is an X line. Basically SE spec but with factory parking sensors, CD changer and no FAP.

And that's always a good thing. For what they do and the potential problems they (to be fair only sometimes) cause in my opinion its something worth doing without. :)
