Peugeot 405 door check straps

Post by Junkman »

Hello all,

Those check straps seem to be a common weak point on those cars. I have seen many with a ridge down the door because they had broken.
It looks like the ones on the front doors of my car aren't working anymore either.
Looking at the new ones, which are surprisingly expensive btw, they don't give me the impression to last very long.

Has anybody out there come up with a proper solution to this issue?

Cheers,

Christian

they probably break if/when the door gets wanged open so the check strap takes the fully leverage of the door, and to this there age and general wear and lack of lib over the years

That's exactly what happens. It's little wonder they break, seeing how flimsy and under-dimensioned they are. I'd say they don't need to be old for this to happen.

i dont think there are really mean to take the leverage of the door being swung open,
this treatment wont only break the check strap but also tear/split the hinge from the pillar

I already know that they are total rubbish, that's why I opened this thread.
So nobody has ever addressed this shortcoming properly?

Personally I don't think they fail too often. You could look at one from other models I guess to see if its more substantial. Try looking at a 806 / Expert van or a 406 if possible.

They all look the same to me, i.e. all are equally flimsy. Remarkable considering how expensive they are.
I'll design a properly engineered solution.

I'm yet to see a broken one, and my 405 has not had an easy life always. That suggests to me, UK corrosion plays a part.

They aren't corroded. The 'hook' portion at the end breaks off. I have yet to see an intact one...
I've seen many 405s with bent doors because of that. Door swings open and the trailing edge of the front wing dents it, a very common 405 sickness.
At least one of them was broken on each 405 I had.

Come to think of it, my 205 I never changed that one. I had to put a new pin in but that was it and it was opened and closed a lot over seven years I had it, and twas not a new car (or strap) by any means...

I do know what you mean in the 405 though the end can "poke" at the door, rather than the door being opened without the strap and catching the wing.
