Hi there! This is my first post on this forum. And i hope that you can help me.
I have a problem with my 406 2.1 Tdi. I got this 406 -97 from a friend. When he bought it, it had leaking diesel pump. And one of his friends changed seals. But after he changed them, so it was parked and unused and not assembled. And now I got this, I want it to work.
Previous owner's friends put together the car so that it would go to drive. They drove it home to me. And according to them, the diesel pump just need to be adjusted in and then it will work. But ..
When the car has not been used in a while you have to use the start gas for it even to start. And once it do, it goes sometimes at idle and sometimes it stops. And I mean stop. It's like it gets too much diesel in the cylinders. And it have a loud tick. And what I have seen on youtube, when the diesel comes in at wrong time it kan make a loudy tick.
And when I get it to idle, so sometimes it responds to the throttle. And sometime when i push the gas pedal, it revs very, very slowly. And after a while it revs up. And when I release the gas, it goes down too far and stops.
Could it be that the pump needs to have a proper review. Or is there something else you should check out first?
I have tried turning the pump, but it does not get better.
I think there is a Lucas Delphi pump in. And it is electrically driven. Could it be gas throttle position sensor?
I am from sweden so i hope that you understand my problem.
I hope that you guys can help me!
Have a nice day!

It could be that there is air getting into the fuel system, try pumping the fuel primer before you start it, if that improves the starting you have an air leak somewhere.

Ay up, Proppen!
I remember one like this at a Citroen/Peugeot specialist I used to work at.
Exactly the same symptons as yours, wouldn't start without EasyStart (shudder), idled roughly, didn't like revving sometimes, had been in bits for a while. When we got down to it, the cambelt was a tooth out on the injection pump. This often happens when belt-driven engines are bump started, which turned out to be the cause in this case!
By all means, check for air in the system, as this could well be hindering the cause. I reckon your cambelt's out. Remove the cam cover, take the belt off, insert timing pins and refit.

ok! I think i have checked the timingbelt, so i think that in the right place... But i will check it again. I have found the marks on the cam cog, pump cog and i think that i found the mark on the fly wheel. It the hole behind the starter motor right?
Thanks!
