Clutch cable auto adjuster on 106 XLD, possible fault??
Hello,
I'd appreciate if anyone could help me. I’m staring to have problems with my 106 1.5 XLD selecting gears when pulling away i.e. first and reverse. I can get first with a shove but when selecting reverse, the gears start to grate.
I thought I could adjust the clutch as the travel is more than the 140 +/- 5mm stated in the book, but I’ve just seen the clutch has an auto adjustment which I suspect isn’t doing what it should do.
Does anyone know if these can be serviced at all, I’m assuming they use a ratchet device to take up the slack which may be at fault.
Thanks, Gixxer

It's not under tension, but not baggie slack if you know what I mean. I don't know if it relevent, but the clutch pedal rests a little higher than the brake pedal.oneday wrote:is there any slack in the cable

How far does the pedal go down before you feel resistance?

doubt if its anthing to do with the cable thats about the right amount. on my wifes 106 xld the clutch arm bent and eventually snapper check that the arm isnt flexing when the clutch is pressed

The arm didn't seem to flex when I was checking the movement earlier.oneday wrote:doubt if its anthing to do with the cable thats about the right amount. on my wifes 106 xld the clutch arm bent and eventually snapper check that the arm isnt flexing when the clutch is pressed

It hasn't been slipping, only last week I checked it by braking whilst keeping the gas on to see if it slipped - it didn't and nearly stalled which I thought indicates a good contact between the clutch plates.citronut wrote:sounds to me like your clutch is on its last legs

They can drag as above.
Grab the end of the cable (grab the washer / bush on the end) on release arm on top of the box under the battery, see how far (gently!) you can pull the cable you'll hear the ratchet.
If there's no movement here then either the cable is faulty (not that common) or the clutch is fully adjusted up and worn out.
The "drop pedal" trick can sometimes cure a faulty adjuster although it can cause more problems and not recommended.

a lot of modern cars it is quite common for a worn out clutch to not disengage with the pedle fully down

Re: Clutch cable auto adjuster on 106 XLD, possible fault??
Hello,
Thanks for the comments and advice so far.
After getting home from work this evening I checked a few things:
I checked the slack and found that I could pull about 20mm of the clutch cable through the end where it connects with the clutch arm, when pulling the cable I could hear the adjuster clicking but the tension (or lack of it) didn’t change.
I tried to take up the slack by making up a collar and slipping it between the washer at the end of the cable and the clutch arm – this helped a little in that I could get first gear easier but reverse still grated, but not as much as before.
I then, whilst my wife pressed the clutch pedal, used my crowbar to move the clutch arm further, this seemed to take up the slack mentioned above - this helped a little in that I could get first gear easier but reverse still grated, but not as much as before; I wanted to see if the gears selected better whilst I had the crowbar leavering the clutch arm, but as I non driver my wife wasn’t confident in doing the selecting especially as my daughters C1 was parked behind!
I didn’t check the oil as my 8mm square drive seemed to have disappeared, I will get another one tomorrow and check – I did notice a signs of an oil leak which could mean the level is low which can’t help.
If it comes to look as though the clutch needs replacing, I would appreciate some advice on what should be replaced as part of the job, where these can be purchased and it turns out that I need to get it replaced by someone else, any recommendations in the Berkshire/Surrey area.
Thanks
