206 1.4 hdi, two problems.

Post by Goingnuts »

Hi, looking for a little advice on a couple of problems I've got with a 206 I've just purchased.

Firstly, it won't engage 5th gear. All other gears are fine and the clutch seems ok too. I've tried it with the engine running and not running, with the clutch engaged whilst not running and also not engaged, it feels like it just hits a barrier. I have managed to get it in a once whilst actually moving but once the clutch is released, there is no drive.
I thought possibly it's the linkages, other than that, i'm a bit lost at what to look for.

Second problem is a severe lack of power under load. It seems to be gutless to about 2000rpm, then the turbo kicks in and it gets a bit of power. Out of gear it will rev through the range with no problems. After a quick glance, I can see the the breather pipe to the air filter housing needs to be put back together properly as you can hear it sucking in more air. Obviously I don't think this is the problem alone.

Any advice on the two problems appreciated.

I do have another 1.4 hdi I can pinch parts off to eliminate things so I'm open to trying anything.

Thanks in advance.

the first prob sound like fith gear syncro is dead,
and the second i would try re/connecting all/any air ducting/pipe's,

because if there are any leaks in the induction the turbo will not kick in

Just been out and took a second look while dodging the rain, it wasn't the air filter ducting. It was a small vaccum hose which goes over the fuel filter which has a hole in it. Will repair that tomorrow. Attached a picture of the offending item.

any vaccum leaks can stop the turbo working

Had the fault codes read this morning, accelerator pedal came up several times! Swapped it with my other one and the difference in travel is unbelievable, pulls a lot better now but I think it still struggles to pick up sometimes. Vacuum pipe was for the brake servo, brakes are a lot sharper now for sorting that out.

Gearbox is definitely on the way out, struggled to get any gear today. Been offered a replacement box for £100 though so that's tomorrows job.

even the servo vaccum pipe leaking can still affect the turbo

I would check the cables before you condemn the gearbox, I had a problem whith not being able to select reverse on my 406 and it was because one end on one cable had come adrift from its crimped termination. Is it crunching when you try and put it into gear? If so that will likely be the clutch not fully disengaging.

Gearbox isn't cable driven, it's off now anyway. New one on tomorrow. Seems the lack of power could be down to the cat, it's come loose internally so it's blocking the air flow once under load. Will sort that tomorrow now and hopefully I'll have a fully functioning car :)

The 5th gear on the HDI seems a bit weak, have had several 206's with the 5th gear casing worn through by the wheel arch liner, and the oil gradually leaks out. 5th gear is the 1st to get starved if the oil level drops due to diff seals leaking.
Changing the whole box is madness if the only problem is 5th, you can take the 5th gear casing off in 2 mins and replace the whole gear assembly in 30 mins.
