Peugeot 306 Petrol To Diesel

Post by floggmolly »

Is It Possible For Me To Put A 1.4 HDI Engine Into A 1.4 Petrol 306? If So How Would Would I Go About Doing It? And What Would I Have To Change?

YES in the same way that you can fit pretty much any engine in any car....

long answeer:

are you nuts?

the 306 never came with a 1.4 HDi , and in fact only came with any HDi engine - a 2 litre toward the end of its `life` , for the most time it had the awesome 1.9TD and not quite so awesome 1.9 non turbo; so you would need the engine , wiring loom (all of it) , gearbox , weld in some engine mounts ,and the ability to set everything up including the computer you`ve just got which you dont have , oh and change the fuel system - complete , from petrol to diesel (and prolly missed alot)

sell the 1.4 and buy a TD ;)

i agree with most of what Harlequin says
apart from the welding in engine mounts, as i thought all the PSA lumps that hang from mountings like the XU/D's and TU/D's, and pretty sure the HDI's will switch from any model cit or pug,

It will fit as far as I know it uses more or less the TU engine mountings. You'll need the diesel gearbox.

Regarding electrics, its mostly plexed. You'd have to source / customise a 107 HDi / C1 HDi loom into the 306 one, unless you wanted to go plexed, which will be very difficult with a 306, possibly using a 307 and a 206 as donors.

It's likely to be very difficult to do, especially dropping it in will not be that bad just mixing / matching mountings / pipework / exhausts, its the electrics that are going to cause you problems. You'd also need to replace the pickup in the tank with the diesel unit too.

TBH, the TUD5 is a better choice in a 306 (yes I know it was never fitted into this) as it will drop in more or less and be very reliable. Failing that an XUD over a DW8

One of these would probably be a lot cheaper:

It's not worth doing far to much aggro, you would be better off just buying a diesel version.

Agree. Unless there's something really specific about the current vehicle that makes it worthwhile to do that and not replace it.

Yes Harlequinn I Know That It Never Came With This Engine. And The 2 Litre Or 1.9 Has To High Tax. 1.4 Hdi Would Be Far More Economical And Cheap On Tax. Spider I Was Also Thinking About That 1.5 Engine Aswell. Would That Be An Easier Job?

You won't get much more economical that the 2.0 Hdi, I can easily get over 60mpg from my 406 which is a lot heavier and the tax is £130.00 per year, it would probably be less in the 306, providing you car was registered after March 01, otherwise they are all the same.

I'm sure someone posted elsewhere that even with a different engine your tax will not change.

For the engine size/emmisions to make any difference to the tax class that car must be registered after Mar 1st 2001.

It was me who posted in Chat about theoretical tax questions.

The TUD would be far easier to fit though if you really wanted to do this but I don't think your tax band would change anyway as Peter has pointed out.

Not to mention your insurance company will not be happy (read expensive) if you do a conversion to something that was not factory produced.

Indeed, mine had a fit at the time and I had to supply an engineers report to them when the 3L PSV engine was removed from my Volvo 265 and replaced with a lowly 2.2L 4-banger.
Insurance doubled :(
