306 overheating problems!?

Post by Tomsonlocal »

Hi I have a 2001 1.8 306 meridian which I'm having a few overheating problems with. As soon as I start the car the temp steadily rises well into the red! I have replaced the thermostat, checked water and coolant levels but still gettIng hot. Sometimes when I turn on the interior fans to help release some heat it Intermitantly blows cold? (still gets hot with heater working just a little less). Doesn't seem to be any blockage in the radiator and no gunk in the top of the oil cap! Any ideas would be much appreciated??

Is the radiator getting hot? If the temperature is at anything like maximum it should be hot all over. The heater blowing cold would indicate air in the system, are you loosing coolant? If so head gasket could be leaking.

No the radiator isn't getting particularly hot and is same temp across the whole radiator meaning its probably not air block.
and I'm not loosing any coolant at all...

i'd still think air lock somewhere in the system,

you need to try thoroughly bleeding the system

with engine switched off start by removing the bung at the top right corner of the rad when looking under the bonnet,

pour coolant into the header tank till it comes out of the rad bleed point and stops sinking,

replace bung in rad,

remove bleed valve/cap on now start engine tank cap still off,
run till collant come out of bleed valve point then replace valve/cap ( tank cap still off ),

now remove the valve/cap at the bulkhead continue running the engine till coolant comes out here, re/fit valve/cap ( tank cap still off ),

topping tank up all the time at each stage,

continue running engine and if/when the coolant in the tank looks calm replace the tank cap,

continue running engine till fans cut in and back out then gently remove the tank cap, if all calm the system should be bled fully,

red should now be evenly hot ( not just warm ) all over

Agree with the water pump,it sounds like the water is not circulating?? I had a 306 recently where the impeller blades broke off.

i agree with the pump failure possibility but it will still be easier and quicker to try the thorough bleeding firstly,
