406 2.1 td power steering leak

hello everyone

i have a power streering fluid leak on my 406 i have found where it is but dont know if it can re paired or not basically the pipe from the power steering pump to the rack starts with a metel pipe from the pump then goes down the front of the engine and connects to a rubber hose and its on the join to the rubber hose that is leaking can the rubber hose or connection be replaced or do i have to change the whole thing ?

I *think* its the whole piece, unless you can remove it and take it to a hydraulic specialist who may be able to repair it for you. We used to do this with our jetwash hose (had some odd fittings in it) when it wore through, much cheaper than a new one.

There's a lot of variation too, depending on if you have variable pas or not, I'm assuming first shape as newer shapes did not usually have the XUD11T unit, UK spec ones did not at least. How to tell: Variable pas is a LOT lighter when stationary / very slow speed, a lot lighter than normal power steering (reminds me of 50's American cars being twirled around with your little finger)

If I remember correctly, variable was only fitted up to late P and some very early R plates. Other models had the normal (1.9 style in effect) pas.

speak to Jame's Cox in the thread below as he has a spares 406 at hes dads place in Heathfield, and he has just blown up the engine on the one he was driving ,
