306 HDI Hot non start

Post by Wil »

A friend of mine has a 1999 306 HDI that starts fine cold and runs OK. But once you stop the engine say to buy Diesel at a garage the engine will not start unless cranked for about 5 mins. If you wait for the engine to cool it starts instantly.
I have not had a look at the car yet so wondered if anyone has had the same problem.

I had a few prob's with my 2.1 regarding hot starts, it didn't always do it, but I did a bit of research into the possible causes of this problem and it appears that internal pump wear might be the culprit. As the diesel heats up it becomes thinner, and this causes a problem inside the pump because it can't create the pressure needed to fire the injectors, this doesn't happen with cold diesel 'cause it's thick and seals well inside the pump. Hope this isn't the case.

If you haven't got access to a lexia / Pug planet, then I would do a injector leak off test first - they can crack, and give a high leak off rate - especially when hot. This robs the rail of pressure and unless the ECU sees 120 bar on cranking, it won't fire the injectors. Just route the leak offs into pop bottles, and run the engine for a couple of minutes - any that leak a lot more than others are suspect.

As said it needs a diag` code check and specialist diagnosis, but It sounds like a fuel pressure problem?? I can remember having this fault on old 306HDi`s and we used to replace a fuel pressure valve on the back of the pump,a small unit with four torix screws.

I think that's the third piston solenoid, the one that cuts the pressure down.
