Son's 306 was like that (mostly "doesn't").
Someone had been at the wiring and there were multiple loose connections.

Our 2004 206 does that sometines. It will sometimes not work although ours does not have aircon.
I find that if you press the heated rear window switch on and off.The fan will come on and will work ok but the engine must be running for it to work.
Might there be a connection between the heated rear window circit and the heater fan for this to occour??

The engine running might be normal for a multiplexed model.

The button might be more a mechanical issue, ie the pcb behind is flexing a little bit pressing the hrw switch enough for the fan contact to work, just a thought...

If it has the digital heater control, the resistor pack around the motor fails, it is a different fan for that car, than the normal one, a bit like the old Xantia A/C heater blower.
No problems regarding ignition switch as far as I know Malcolm

The car has the basic heater switch and has no air conditioning.

Just to let you know that the problem has been sorted. I have fitted a second hand swich console bought for £12 on ebay and all is now well. Dam awkward job replacing the control cables behind the console though.
I gave the old swich unit a post mortem and found the contacts to be dirty with traces of carbon. But a good clean up of the contact area and it should do the job again so I will not throw it away. Not just yet anyway...

Not that I'm aware of Malcolm, I cannot recall seeing one with this, some 307's do but they used to burn the 'start' position out and lock it in "start" which is quite fun. Was a recall on these to cure that.
