307 - Alternator clutch

Post by sooty »

My wifes 307 Hdi90 52plt, has intermittently had a screeching session which believed was the drive belt.

But reading more into it, it could be the Alternator clutch.

Can these be replaced with a new part by myself or an alternative type of non-clutch Alternator be fitted.

thanks

are you sure it has a clutch and its not just a dry bearing screeching, or even the belt needs a little more tension,

Thanks for the reply,

The drive belt is tensioned by the automatic rubber bush tensioner with a roller. The screech was at start-up at first thing in morning when alternator is at load charging. Air con not on and powersteering does not make the belt slip (squeal/screech) when turning corner off the drive.

When Googled, The 307 hdi has a clutch within the Alternator pulley is a known problem even after renewing the polyvee belt and tensioner.

This is why I ask if the clutch is renewable or can another non-clutch Alternator be used.

thanks

I'd imagine the clutch is there as a sort of self regulating device to stop the alternator cooking the electrics when the engine is at full throttle and there's no electricity being used...

Only guessing though as Diesels really aren't my cup of tea.

The alternator clutch is a device which allows the alternator to freewheel when engine RPM drops suddenly or if the rotational speed is not constant. They cause minimal problems on PSA engines. On the peoples wagen diesels they are a common failure causing a variety of problems including screeching and causing the belt to dance leading to failure of the belt and the tensioner. It can fail in either of 2 ways.
1. total disintegration
2. It seizes and thus behaves as if it were a solid pulley.
You need a secial kit (which is not expensive) to change these pulleys.
I dont know about UK prices but Pulleys are available from about €30 up.

OK Thanks all for your replies.

It turns out the screeching noise my wife told me about asumming it was the Drive belt/Alternator Clutch, which I had not heard till today.

Its the Clutch release bearing, varying its pitch and noise when depressing the clutch pedal.

So I've a change of course in getting the parts (clutch kit) to recitfy.

Thanks

You are very welcome. Im sure I can speak for the other contributers as well. Thank you very much for coming back with the final diagnosis. I'm sure this will be of help to someone else. Many posts are started with someone asking for help in solving a problem. Most receive many helpful and informative replies, but in several cases the original poster doesn't post the details of the solution to the problem. This information is of value, both to others with problems, and to those who try to help
